1. BLS: Basic Life support SURVEY ---> Steps 1, 2, 3, 4 ---->
2. ACLS: Advance cardio life support SURVEY --> "ABCD" - ANSWER 1.
- FUNDAMENTAL to every ACLS Algorithm is the BLS survey.
- The BLS Survey is the first 4 steps that you will take when treating ANY emergency situation:
THE 4 steps in the BLS Survey:
(1) Check responsiveness
- By tapping and shouting, "Are you all right?"
- Scan x 5-10 sec for absent or abnormal breathing:
I. (+) absent or abnormal breathing ---> 2. CHECK PULSE:
i. (+) PULSE ---> START RESCUE BREATHING
ii. (-) PULSE ---> START CPR ---> AED
(2) Activate the emergency response system:
- Obtain a AED.
(3) Circulation:
- Check for a carotid pulse x 5-10 seconds.
- If (+) pulse: START RESCUE BREATHING
- If (-) pulse: START (30:2) CPR: "CAB sequence" + Check for a shockable rhythm with the AED --> Follow
the instructions provided by the AED or Begin ACLS SURVEY ABCD & Protocol.
2. The ABCD's of the ACLS Survey are:
(A) Airway:
- *Maintain airway* and use advanced airway if needed.
- *Confirm* THE of placement of an advanced airway &
, - *Secure* the advanced airway device.
(B) Breathing:
- Give bag-mask ventilation, provide supplemental oxygen, and avoid excessive ventilation.
- Monitor adequacy of ventilation and oxygenation.
(C) Circulation:
- Obtain IV access: giving fluids if needed.
- Attach ECG leads: Id & Tx arrhythmias --> use AED.
(D) Differential diagnosis:
- Look for reversible causes /contributing factors & TX.
Outline of the 4 steps in the BLS Survey : " CAB" - ANSWER (1) Circulation:
- Check for a carotid pulse for 5-10 seconds.
- If (-) pulse: start HIGH QUALITY CPR.
- if (+) pulse: start RESCUE BREATHING
(2) Activate the emergency response system and obtain a AED/Defibrillator.
- If (-) pulse: check for a shockable rhythm W/ AED.
(3) Check BREATHING & Responsiveness:
- by tapping and shouting, "Are you all right?"
- Scan x 5-10 seconds for absent or abnormal breathing.
AFTER "CAB" OF BLS --->
The ABCD's of the ACLS Survey are DONE: - ANSWER (A) Airway:
