wildlife ecology and management
- ANS-What is the Public Trust Doctrine?
-Habitat Restoration Acts of 1937, Pittman-Robertson (P-R) Act, and 1950, Dingle-Johnson
(D-J) Act
-The P-R (for hunting) and D-J (for angling) Acts are responsible for the excise tax placed on
hunting and fishing equipment. If you purchase a gun, ammunition, or fishing equipment, you
pay an 11% tax, above the normal sales tax. These funds go to research and habitat
management for fish and game species. Several research projects at the University of Nebraska
are supported by P-R or D-J funds. - ANS-What do the Dingle-Johnson Act and
Pittman-Robertson Act have in common?
-Hughes v. Oklahoma. Oklahoma law had prohibited catching native minnows and transporting
for sale out of state. Hughes challenged that law because he believe he had a right to run a
business and make a living. The Supreme Court ruled in Hughes' favor, stating that the state's
rights (which Geer v. Connecticut had supported) cannot conflict with Constitutional authority of
Congress to regulate interstate commerce(the state can't impose a law on something that the
federal government regulates). - ANS-How did Hughes v. Oklahoma modify the Geer ruling
"the application of ecological knowledge to populations of vertebrate animals and their plant and
animal associates in a manner that strikes a
balance between the needs of those populations and the needs of people"
"management of wildlife populations in the context of the ecosystem"
GOALS: Increase, decrease, sustain/harvest, leave it alone/monitor
