Module 1: Basic Elements of a Medical
Word, Suffixes, and Prefixes
Module Learning Objectives:
1. To identify the word elements used to create medical words
2. To divide medical words into their constituent parts
3. To learn the basic rules of defining and creating medical words
4. To locate and use the chart of pronunciation guidelines correctly
5. To spell, pronounce, and define the medical terms in these three chapters

Overview:
This module covers chapters 1-3 of MTS.

Medical science has its own specialized vocabulary that derives mostly from ancient Greek and
to a lesser extent from Latin. While there are other linguistic influences on medical terminology,
such as modern developments in pharmacology and diagnostics, and eponymous diseases (e.g.,
those diseases commonly known by name of the primary researcher, such as Parkinson disease),
by far the most difficult aspect of learning medical terminology is becoming familiar with terms
transliterated from Greek and Latin.

Word Elements
There are four elements used in formulating medical terms:
1. word roots,
2. combining forms,
3. suffixes, and
4. prefixes.

The primary meaning of a term is the word root as derived from Greek or Latin, in most cases.

The combining form is basically the word root + a vowel (usually o, sometimes i, e, or u). The
addition of a vowel at the end of a root allows the root to be combined with other elements to
create a complete term.

In MTS, the lavender boxes called Medical Word Elements in chapters 4-16 will contain the
word roots and combining forms that you should know: the word root precedes the backslash (/)
and the combining form is the word root + vowel found after the backslash (/).

You use the word root when you add a suffix that begins with a vowel; you use the
combining form when you add a suffix that begins with a consonant.
