PRACTICAL EXAM - NUR2000 (LO4)
STUDY SET
Amoxicillin : Introduction - Answer It's a penicillin used to treat bacterial infections,
particular repertory infections.
Amoxicillin : BNF - Answer Dosage : between 125mg to 500mg 3x a day but an adult it's
around 500mg every 8 hours (sinusitis)
Route : via the mouth, injection or intravenous infusion/IV
Monitoring renal impairment : Increased risk of convulsions so an accumulation of
sodium injections can occur in patients with renal impairment and isn't harmful for
preggers
Reduce dose if eGFR 30 mL/minute/1.73 m2 or less (consult product literature).
Conditions : UTIs and sinusitis
Cautions : make sure to stay hydrated with higher dosages and if undergoing parenteral
therapy (option 2 is oral admin is poorly absorbed)
Directions for administration : if given through IV make sure that diluted solutions of
glucose or sodium chloride is given immediately via drip.
Side effects : nausea, diarrhoea and hypersensitivity
Allergies : Those with a history of atopic allergy are at a higher risk of allergic reactions
to amoxicillin due to the SE hypersensitivity and once allergic to this type, the patient
will be allergic to all types of penicillin (though less than 0.05% of patients are allergic to
this drug) so may take an antibiotic instead.
Amoxicillin : DB (Absorption) - Answer It fully dissociates in an aqueous solution and is
rapidly absorbed by the small intestine
(about 70% bioavailable)
It's half life is around 1 hour
Amoxicillin : DB (Distribution) - Answer It's distributed via the circulatory system by
binding to the plasma proteins
Amoxicillin : DB (Metabolism) - Answer This drug metabolises in the liver and it's
microsomes
Amoxicillin : DB (Excretion) - Answer According to drug bank, the route of elimination
for the drug is via the renal system/kidneys and approximately will be urinated out 6
hours after administration
, Atorvastatin : Introduction - Answer Is a statin that's prescribed to inhibit endogenous
production to lower lipid and cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular
disease including stroke
Atorvastatin : BNF - Answer Dosage : 10mg to 80mg once daily (interval if needed to
increase)
Route : mouth
Contradictions : of patient has diabetes, their blood glucose level should be more
closely monitored as their BGL may increase nor cannot be taken by anyone under the
age of 10.
Monitoring renal impairment : you would increase the dosage to 20mg daily if not done
so and keep a fluid chart to monitor input and output daily as well as an AKI pathway.
Conditions : high cholesterol and thrombosis
Cautions-directions for administration : can be taken with or without food but after food
may help with nausea
Side effects : nausea, diarrhoea and hypersensitivity
Allergies : Is rare but an alternative could be Bile acid-binding resins, like
cholestyramine
Atorvastatin : DB (Absorption) - Answer through oral administration by the stomach
Half life = 14 hours
Bioavailability = 14 % due to metabolism in instestine
Atorvastatin : DB (Distribution) - Answer It's distrusted via the plasma proteins in the
blood
Atorvastatin : DB (Metabolism) - Answer Is the liver and intestine
Atorvastatin : DB (Excretion) - Answer It's excreted via bile and urine
Ibruprofen : Introduction - Answer It's an NSAID and non-selective COX inhibitor sited to
treat mild moderate pain, fever and inflammation
Ibruprofen : BNF - Answer Dosage : via the mouth on an adult if would average around
400mg if not modified (but may need to be taken up to 4 times daily)
Route : via the mouth, skin or IV
Monitoring : Ibuprofen can mask symptoms of infection, which may lead to delayed
initiation of appropriate treatment and thereby worsen infection outcome
renal impairment : must stay hydrated and those with NSAIDs may impair their renal
