Facility Layout

Common layouts

-Objective of facility layout decisions is to arrange the elements in the facility to ensure a
smooth work flow.
-Four common layouts:
• WORKCENTER: also called a job ship, functional layout, and department. It is a format
in which similar equipment or functions are grouped together. A part being worked on
travels in a sequence from workstation to workstation.
o Suited for low volume production of a variety of nonstandard products.
o Hospital’s maternity wards and intensive care units.
• ASSEMBLY LINE: also called a flow shop. It is one in which equipment and processes
are arranged according to the steps by which product is made. The path is a straight
line.
o Shoes and car washes.
• MANUFACTURING CELL: groups dissimilar machines to work on products with
similar shapes and process requirements.
• PROJECT LAYOUT: product stays in an area and equipment moves to it. Usually
because it is heavy.
-An entire plant can be arranged according to the product flow, from fabrication then
subassembly, then final assembly. Different layouts can be used in each area.

Workcenters

-Workcenters or job shops – a common practice in arranging a workcenter is to arrange them
in a way that optimizes their relative placement. Optimal placement means placing
workcenters with large amounts of interdepartmental traffic adjacent to one another to reduce
the costs of material handling.
• Suppose we want to arrange 8 workcenters in an optimal way. The building is 80
feet wide and 160 feet long. And our workcenters will be 40 feet by 40 feed each.
• If a company has another factory that makes similar products, information about flow
patterns can be abstracted from records. If this is a new product line, then
information can come from routine sheets or process or industrial engineers.
• Material is transported in a crate by a forklift truck…one crate per truck so one load
per truck. Transportation cost is $1 between adjacent workcenters and $1 extra for
each workcenter in between.
• The first step is to illustrate the interworkcenter flow by a model.
