ESSENTIAL COUNSELOR QUALITIES - ANS good listener, nonjudgemental, keep the
interview and members interactions under control
VITAL COUNSELOR SKILLS - ANS observe non-verbal queues, ask perceptive questions, help
members assess behaviors and attitudes, express empathy for members, assist members to
identify needs and wants, develop a workable budget, gain agreement on budget with member,
suggest workable approaches and potential solutions, improve money management skills,
assemble a complete financial picture, offering hope, make referrals, assess progress
how to change behavior - ANS recognize the need for change, gather information and introduce
new ideas, revise plan as needed, make changes part of everyday habits, inspire change
what should you not want to change about members? - ANS their values- ones deeply held
principles on standards of behavior, a judgement of what is important in life
what DO you want to change about members? - ANS attitude, behaviors and perceptions

stories, metaphores

money status - ANS associates wealth with self worth- keeping up with the joneses
money vigilance - ANS the perceived need for secrecy about ones financial affairs. may
withhold information about their finances with their partners, whether they have a lot of money
or not
paralanguage - ANS words deliver meaning by their content, how they are said, and by their
timing
selective perception - ANS individuals see things differently, often as a result of the patterns
their experience
patterned responses - ANS some communication patterns are so ingrained the response is
automatic
hard approach - ANS communicates in ways that are orderly, specific and straightforward
soft approach - ANS offers possibilities and suggestions, avoiding absolutes or directives
pacing - ANS counselors use pacing to create a feeling of connection with a member by
matching physical characteristics, such as posture, energy level and breathing
blending - ANS counselors use blending to display communications patterns that match a
members, such as speech rate, tone, vocabulary and appearance
restating or paraphrasing - ANS active listening technique that can be used to confirm that one
understands what a member is trying to convey
summarizing - ANS active listening technique that is used to improve communication by
highlighting key information and remain in control of the session
