"Maryland Massage Therapy Jurisprudence Examination" means - ANS-The test
developed by the Board to assess an applicant's knowledge of the statute & regulations
governing massage therapy in the State.
"Massage Therapy Education Program" means - ANS-a course of study that prepares
individuals in subjects related to the knowledge, techniques, skills, & abilities used in the
practice of massage therapy.
"Massage Therapy" does NOT include - ANS-diagnosis or treatment of illness, disease,
or injury; adjustment, manipulation, or mobilization of any of the articulations of the
osseous (bone) structures of the body or spine; or laying on of hands, consisting of
pressure or movement, with the exception of such techniques described in this
regulation on a fully-clothed individual to specificially affect the electromagnetic energy
or energetic field of the human body.
"Massage Therapy" includes - ANS-massage, myotherapy, & synonyms or derivatives
of these terms, with OR without the aid of: cold packs; nonlegend topical applications; or
heat limited to hot packs and heating pads
"Massage Therapy" means - ANS-the use of manual techniques on soft tissues of the
human body including effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), tapotement
(tapping), stretching, compression, vibration, & friction.
"Non bona-fide treatment" - ANS-A license/registration holder treats or examines a
client in a way that involves sexual contact, but there is no therapeutic reason for the
procedure, or the procedure falls outside of scope of practice.
"Practice Massage Therapy" means - ANS-to engage professionally and for
compensation in massage therapy.
"Practice non-therapeutic massage" means - ANS-to engage professionally and for
compensation in massage therapy in a setting that is NOT a health care facility.
