For your initial post, address the following:

 According to the behaviorists Watson and Skinner, we could never know what is really

going on in the mind. However, that is the focus of cognitive psychology. Do you think

we can really understand the mind? Why or why not?

 Watson founded the psychological approach of behaviorism which declares that

"observable behavior provides the only valid data for psychology" (E Bruce

Goldstein, 2019). Essentially, Watson believed that only our behaviors and actions

are deemed worthy of being studied in the realm of psychology. "Watson’s goal

was to replace the mind as a topic of study in psychology with the study of

directly observable behavior" (E Bruce Goldstein, 2019). Skinner founded the

psychological approach of operant conditioning which "focuses on how behavior

is strengthened by presentation of positive reinforcers" (E Bruce Goldstein, 2019).

Skinner's approach studies the behaviors of those who receive praise or treats for

"good behavior". Skinner's approach can also be applied to negative behaviors by

utilizing criticism. Both Watson and Skinner focus on one's behaviors rather than

what processes are happening in the mind. For me, I believe that the behaviors we

exhibit are our own ways to display the processes and reactions that take place in

our minds. While I feel that we cannot truly understand every process of the mind,

interpreting the displayed behaviors allows us to begin to better comprehend the

way the mind works.
