1. Explain the G.I. Bill. In what ways does it change America?
The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, which is commonly known as the G.I. Bill of
Rights and it nearly stalled its Congress because members thought that the bill was
controversial. Some members of Congress debated that paying unemployed Veterans $20 a
week would make it where they would not look for work. It was also questioned that sending
Veterans that are battle-hardened to college, which is usually a privilege reserved for the rich.
But despite the differences they did all agree that something must me done to help Veterans
grasp onto civilian life. The G.I. Bill almost died when the Senate and House members came
together to adjust their opinions on the bill. Both groups agreed on having the education and
home loan benefits but did not agree on the unemployment part. Rep. John Gibson of
Georgia is who casted the tie-breaking vote. The Senate then approved the final bill on June
12th, and the House approved it on June 13th. On June 22, 1944, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed
the bill into a law. The G.I. Bill gave World War II men and women many options and
benefits such as going to college or the option to continue their education without having to
pay tuition or having loans. This changed the lives of many veterans in such a positive way.




2. Why did suburbanization occur after World War II? What changes does suburbia bring to
American society?

After World War II suburbs were moved to heavily due to many historical forces. Due to
depression, the baby boom epidemic, government involvement with housing development,
and all the marketing of automobiles, and dramatic changes in the demographics was the
main cause of the families moving to the suburbs. American culture went under a major
change when families began moving from farms and cities into the suburbs. By the year
1970, America had become the first nation to have more suburbs than cities than farms. The
