PGA PGM LVL 2~Turfgrass Management
Exam Questions with Correct Answers
Superintendent's Primary role and MAJOR job responsibilities. - Answer-Directing an
agronomically sophisticated turfgrass management program designed to provide a
playing surface that meets the clubs aesthetic and playing standards, while preserving
the integrity of the environment.
-Managing the entire property, including the grounds surrounding the course, practice
putting greens, driving ranges, buildings, fences, bridges, shelters, entrance roads,
parking lots, etc.

Turfgrass Adaptation - Answer-Grasses are different in their tolerances for heat, cold,
drought, shade, pests, disease, and adapt to the area they are in much like animals.

Turfgrass Selection - Answer-Location of grass on course, type of facility, zones, are all
factors considered in the selection of turfgrass for different facilities

Grass Selections - Answer-- Greens are planted with a grass that can tolerate low
mowing heights
-Roughs are more likely to be planted with grass that has a lower maintenance
requirement.

Cool Season Grasses - Answer-Grasses that are adapted to cooler temps of (60-75
degrees)
These grasses stay green all year in areas with mild winters. in areas that get snow,
they become dormant and turn brown
Examples-Bluegrass, Bentgrasses, Fescues, and Rygrasses.

Warm Season Grasses - Answer-These grasses grow best in temps of (80-95 degrees).
When temps drop much below 50 they go dormant and turn brown. In these cases,
overseeding is sometimes used to provide green playing surfaces all year round.
Examples-Bermuda, Bahiagrass, Zoysiagrass

Transition Zone - Answer-Climates overlap in the transition zone and both cool and
warm season grasses are used on golf courses.

Basic Survival Needs for Turfgrasses - Answer-1) Sunlight-Makes it possible for a plant
to produce its own food through photosynthesis.
2) Water-In most climates, the existing availablilty of water is insufficient for golf course
turfgrass. Irrigating the turfgrass provides water that is not supplied by rainfall or other
natural means.
3) Nutrients-Most of the 15 essential nutrients needed for turfgrass occur naturally in
sufficient quantities in the air, water and soil. 3 essential nutrients (nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium) must be supplemented through fertilizers.

, Grass Growing Point - Answer-In most plants the growing point is at the tip of the shoot.
In grass the growing point is located at the base of the shoot very close to the ground.
Shoots need sunlight in order to produce the plants food. Roots absorb water and
nutrients.

Soil Texture - Answer-Soil can be classified by the size of its particles.

Sandy Soil - Answer-Allows water to pass through quickly, leaving the plant with
insufficient access to thses basic survival needs. Often results in rapid drainage and
therefore leaves water and nutrients inexcessable to plants.

Clay Soil - Answer-Tends to retain water, leaving no room for oxygen, the plant
essentially suffocates. Often results in poor damage and compaction.

Loam Soil - Answer-Provides just the right balance between drainage and retention,
creating a good growing environment for the plant. Considered "ideal" soil for promoting
turfgrass growth.

Soil pH - Answer-Soil pH is the measurement of soil Alkalinity
-Measured on a scale of 0-14
-7 indicates neutral, neither acidic or alkaline
-A measure of 0 means highly acidic
-A measurement of 14 means highly alkaline
-Add Sulfur to lower the pH (too alkaline)
-Add Lime to soil t raise pH (too acidic)

Syringing Technique - Answer-A technique to cool the grass in extreme heat to save the
grass at first signs of wilt.

Mowing Requirements - Answer--The longer the grass the healthier it is
-Short heights are stressful for all grasses
-Grass has its growing point at the base of the shoot
-Removal of the shoot affects the turfgrass plant in a number of ways.

Removal of the Shoot - Answer-Reduction of leafy part of the plant (the shoot) resulting
in a reduction of the plant's ability to make its own food
-Reduction of root length resulting in a reduced ability to absorb water and nutrients
-Reduction in resistance to invasion by disease as cut blades of turfgrass is more
vulnerable

Types of Grass Determine its Tolerance to Mowing Heights - Answer--Greens
1/8"-1/4"
Often mowed daily, sometimes twice a day
High maintenance
