Milkweeds are.. - ANS cardiac glycosides which is a type terpenoids. They are a
major group of plant chemical toxins. They taste bitter so its used to repel animals
so they don't eat them. They do not contain Nitrogen.
Types of Terpenoids - ANS New pine cones have RESIN. Resins (oleoresins) contain
terpenoids. Another plant defended by terpenoids which is poison ivy which
contains resin.
What are alkaloids - ANS - Toxins that contain NITROGEN
- Ruins the animal's ability to digest food (interfere with the digestive process)
Two types of hormones involved with the growth of an insect (insect growth
hormones): - ANS 1) Moulting hormone(ecdysone)- the process of changing their
skeleton (exo-skeleton)
2) Juvenile hormone - only there for the early stages
Balsam Fir - ANS Contains Phytojuvenile hormone. So if an insect eats this means
that the insect will stay young forever. Insects that eat a plant with phytojuvenile
hormones they do not mature! They will stay the same and die young (never gets
to the adult stage and it doesn't reproduce).
Phototoxins - ANS -very nasty side effects
, -they migrate under the skin or if an insect migrate under the exoskeleton, they
make damage these areas by ultraviolent light and can result in blisters.
