RPL 470 Exam Final Questions &
Answers 2024/2025

Why has research not shown a strong relationship between use density and crowding? Discuss and be
specific. - ANSWERSThe biggest distinction is that crowding is a mindset, density is physical limit. Some
people feel crowded with two people around them, some people feel crowded with 200 people around
them, it's fluid. Density is quantifiable and has a limit. Density infers that there is a set limit and once it is
met, it should not be breached otherwise damage will occur.

What are two methods managers can use to reduce conflicts? Discuss how these might be applied to a
specific situation and type of conflict. - ANSWERSZoning: Is best for direct or interpersonal conflict. For
example, increased usage of bikes on hiking trails. Adding signage explaining no bikes allowed on a hiking
trail prevents them from entering the trails and thus keeping the hikers and bikers apart, preventing
conflict.

Education: Best for indirect conflict. Teaches people how they bond and why they should be able to
share the land they're using. Think of the signs indicating etiquette on the river, reminding people not to
drink, to share the space, etc.

In class we discussed asymmetrical and symmetrical conflicts. Describe the difference between these
two types of conflict and provide an example of each. - ANSWERSAsymmetrical: Only one person is mad.
A good example is cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. The cross-country skiers are mad at the
snowmobilers for destroying their trails, and the snowmobilers do not give a crap.

Symmetrical: Both sides are having a problem with one another. The horse back riders are mad at the
bikers, and the bikers are mad at the horse back riders.

We discussed three types of coping responses to crowding and conflict. Discuss each and give an
example of how visitors might exhibit each type of coping response. - ANSWERSDisplacement, product
shift and rationalization.

Displacement: They're moving, they're moving away from the thing that is causing them anger or
irritation. This is referred to as spatial displacement. They could also come at a different time, weekday
vs. weekend, early morning vs. late at night, etc.

Product Shift: The definition of the experience changes. It is a change to the motivation of why you went
to do what you did. An example is going mountain bike riding because you want to challenge your skills
and get more experience, but there is a race going on that day, so instead you are going for the happy,
friendly and social aspect of the experience instead.
