Fractured Narrative of
“Dream on Monkey Mountain”
“Dream on Monkey Mountain” is a surrealist drama written by Derek Walcott that is centered on
the character of Makak, an Afro-Caribbean man, who despises his racial identity. He is
inceptively imprisoned for criminal activities and detained by the colonial authorities. Thereafter,
most of the narrative occurs within an intoxicated dream where Makak witnesses a white
apparition that directs him to return to Africa. He escapes from the prison, convinces others to
support his venture and eventually arrives in Africa, attaining the rank of Kingship. In the final
scene, Makak arbitrates over distinguished figures of western civilization, executes the “White
Goddess” from his vision and breaks the shackles of his mental slavery. He accepts his real
