HE 210 Final Exam
Pennie Munro(44
questions and
answers)
Describe licensing and certification of health care
personnel - answer -Many individuals, especially
those who are providing direct care to the public,
need to be licensed in order to practice. The
purpose of the license is to protect the public from
unqualified practitioners.
The first step in obtaining a license is to graduate
from an approved educational program. Each
educational institution is required to meet state
guidelines before they can be approved to accept
students into their program. The state sets
guidelines on curriculum content, instructor
qualifications, sites used for clinical experiences,
and location of programs.
After the student has graduated from this
approved school, he/she must take a state board
examination. Each state sets their own standards
for success in passing but the tests are usually
developed by a national test bank. The applicants
must also pass a criminal background check. If the

,applicant's background check is free of felony
violations and they pass the exam, the applicant
will be issued a license to practice in the state
where the exam was taken. If the applicant wants
to practice in another state, an application has to
be made to the other state and their guidelines
followed. (This may or may not include taking
another exam).
The license can be renewed but in order for that to
happen, most professions require that the licensee
obtain continuing education. Licensing boards also
have the ability to censure or remove someone's
license.
Unlike licensing, certification is not mandatory to
practice. Some practitioner's desire to increase
their level of expertise by getting more education.
Many of the health care professional organizations
(i.e. American Nurses Association) have
established educational guidelines for this and
offer these opportunities (i.e. certified nurse - OR:
CNOR). Besides professional growth, a reason an
