Explain what is meant by the term "Technology Transfer" and explain the role that
agriculture will play
in technology transfer in the future? - answersAccording to the text book the term
technology transfer is when technology created specifically for one purpose is adopted
by other users or different applications.
Agriculture will create more instances of technology transfer to other industries since
farmers and Agriculture researchers will need to find ways how to feed more people
with less land space. The technologies that have been created in America and
developed countries can be transferred to underdeveloped countries helping them to
become more self-sustainable by growing their own crops and using their own
agricultural machines. Not only that, but biotechnology can be utilized to continue to
, feed people who do not have supplies or food. The biggest aspect of Agricultural
technology transfer is that existing and developing technologies can become available
to most people and not just farmers.
In the near future technology that is developed will help agriculture operations become
more productive and technological advancements in agriculture will be transferred to the
general public in some way. More of the world will continue to become involved in
farming as the technology continues to advance.
All technologies have intended and unintended consequences. Give an example of a
current technology
and provide an explanation of the intended consequence, as well as the potential
unintended
consequences of the technology. - answers
Biotechnology is a common term in today's society. Explain how biotechnology has
benefited society,
give two examples of why it is controversial and finally, explain what should or could be
done to ensure
its safe use? - answersAccording to the textbook in chapter 2, biotechnology has
reached many industries. Biotechnology has benefited society by allowing us to amplify
food sources, manipulate the human body, produce helpful drugs and medical products.
Additionally, the world has been able to combat certain food shortages like rice, reduce
waste and mine precious materials more quickly. Fuels like ethanol can be derived from
corn and other foods to fuel vehicles.
An example of why Biotechnology is controversial includes the use of cloning animals
and humans. Groups, especially religious groups argue that cloning attempts to take
control over what God intended. Many people do not believe that attempts to alter living
beings before they are born is ethical. Some American Jewish and Muslims do believe
that cloning can have a legitimate purpose in society.
A second controversy over biotechnology can be seen when looking at Genetically
modified foods. GM food production in America has historically had a higher acceptance
rate than European countries which is linked to trust in each nation's government.
Surveys claimed in the textbook indicate that Americans have more trust in the
government and believe that approved foods through the FDA should be trusted. Mainly
people do not want to eat foods that have chemicals added to them which may be
harmful.
As some efforts from the USDA, FDA, and EPA have helped keep most Biotechnologies
safe, there still needs to be stricter policies put in place to ensure the safety of people
and the environment. Allowing countries to have the choice of whether they accept or
decline biotechnology is the best way to ensure that the people who want it can get it
and the people who don't want it won't. One last example is that all GM foods should be
labeled even if its characteristics are identical to non-modified
