The Art of Time
Context: This screenplay is based in a small village in the
countryside of France; the main character is Remy, a struggling and
perfectionist artist. In the previous Scene, Remy was at a village
festival when she met an Enchantress. At the festival, Remy wanted to
capture the moments perfectly on her canvas, but with the lively
atmosphere, she found herself frustrated. Her obsessive need for
every detail to be perfect and the constant movement of her muses led
to a messy canvas. This is when the Enchantress sees Remy and
approaches her for seduction. The scene starts the following morning.
INT. REMY'S STUDIO APARTMENT - DAWN
The soft morning sun fills Remy's studio as she stands by a
floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the village square. Only one of
the white, paper-thin curtains is open. The sound of trickling water
from a shower is faint.
(Over shoulder of Remy's point of view): Remy peers down at the
village square where an empty canvas and easel was left from the
night before.
Enchantress (out of shot) (seductively)
The water is still warm, chérie [darling], if you want to shower.
(Close-up of Remy's face): Remy's eyes don't waiver from the empty
canvas in the square. The Enchantress is in focus in the background
and slowly approaching Remy. The Enchantress is wearing a pearly
white robe.
Remy (distant)
Hmm. You can turn the water off.
With a short magical movement from The Enchantress, the sounds of
water stop. The Enchantress reaches for Remy's right cheek with her
left hand, slowly turning Remy towards her.
(Medium side shot of Remy and the Enchantress)
Enchantress
What's wrong, mon cherie [my dear]?
Remy melts to the Enchantress's touch.
Remy (frustrated)
Yet another painting, unfinished. I'm sick!
, (Long shot of Remy's apartment): The apartment is messy.
(Tracking shot of Remmy) Remmy is frantically cleaning
Remmy
Everything! Everything must be perfect. It never is. It only is, for
a moment. One singular moment. Then they move. The moment is gone.
How did he place his hand? On her face or her hip? Did the left eye
shine in the moonlight? Or was it the right? Don't tell me art isn't
perfect or that there are happy trees! My art must be—
(Close-up of Remmy and The Enchantress's hand): The Enchantress
interrupts Remmy by gently placing her hand on Remy's before she can
move.
(Slow pan up to Remmy's and The Enchantress's face): Remy looks at
their hands, while The Enchantress looks lovingly at Remy.
Enchantress (softly)
Perfect? Mon amoure [My love], it can be.
Remy looks longingly at The Enchantress, and they make eye contact.
Hold.
Enchantress
What if I told you there was a way to freeze time. At the perfect
moment. You just have to tell me when. Then you can paint to your
little heart's content.
Remmy
It can't be. My art will never be perfect.
(Long shot of the apartment): The Enchantress moves slowly to the
parted curtains, drawing both parts together. The room becomes
slightly darker.
(Close-up of the robe pocket/watch): The Enchantress pulls a pocket
watch out of her robe pocket and then taps it three times.
(Over shoulder of Remmy): In the distance, quiet screams can be heard
