Catcher in the Rye ch. 1-7 Questions and
Answers Graded A+
1. Where is Holden now? What is he describing? - answer Probably a mental
facility/hospital, he's describing his parents being kind of distant and embarrassed, and
his brother DB being a sellout- feels like they aren't authentic

2. What does Holden mean when he says something or someone "kills him?" - answer
Makes him feel something, it's good

3. Why does Holden say he "was trying to feel some kind of good-by?" - answer
Because he needs closure, leaves places often and tries to extract the good/ any and all
memories from his time there

4. Does Holden like Mr. Spencer? Why or why not? - answer Yes because Holden
has empathy for him, nearly pities him, but tries to be optimistic about Mr. Spencer's life
situation. He also said he would've come to say goodbye to him even if Spencer didn't
write him a note to.

5. As he speaks to Mr. Spencer, Holden is also wondering about the ducks in Central
Park. Why is he concerned? - answer b/c Holden lives in NY, and he was thinking
about how the lagoon in central park must be frozen over, and if so, did somebody
come to take the ducks to a zoo or did they just fly away

6. What is Holden's problem with Mr. Haas? - answer Mr. Haas was "the phoniest
bastard" holden's ever met in his life. Mr. Haas was very selective/judgemental about
who's parents he associated himself with (i.e., if someone's parents weren't
conventional-looking or dressed whimisically/gangsterish he would shake hands with
them and give them a "phony" smile, and then move onto talking for 30 minutes with
some preppy/conforming parents)

7. Identify Ward Stradlater and Robert Ackley. What does Holden think of Ackley?
Choose a remark or thought of Holden that you think is significant in revealing the
personalities of both Ackley and Holden. - answer Ward Stradlater is Holden's senior
roommate. Robert Ackley (senior) is Holden's next-door-roomer who always barges in
on Holden after Robert showers in their shared shower. Holden says Ackley has terrible
teeth, is 6'4", has an acne-filled face, and also has a terrible personality/is a nasty guy
who hates pretty much everyone. "He always picked up your personal stuff and looked
at it. Boy, could he get on your nerves sometimes." (27)"'I don't know, and I don't give a
damn. How 'bout sitting down or something , Ackley kid? You're right in my ******* light.'
He didn't like it when you called him 'Ackley kid.'" (28)
