Gonorrhea - ANS Caused by Gonococci.PID sterility disseminated infection (which is spread

not sufficient to prevent infection. Causes corneal ulceration, with profuse yellow or gray

survive within macrophages. Localized nodules coalesce to form granulomas and ulcers on the
penis in men and labia in women. A chronic and progressively destructive bacterial
infection.Disease can spread to bones, joints, and liver. Infection can spread to inguinal area
and produce pseudo buboes.

Bacterial Vaginosis - ANS Overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, pH rises in vagina, "clue cells" are
found on a wet mount, fishy odor present assoc with PID, chorioamnionitis, preterm labor,
postpartum endometritis; Treatment of males is not recommended.

Bacterial STDs - ANS Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Chancroid, Granuloma Inguinale (Donovanosis),
Bacterial Vaginosis.

Chlamydia - ANS Most common STI in the US; leading cause of infertility; common bacterial
STI in the US; Cause is C. trachomatis; localizes to the epithelial tissue and can spread through
the urogenital tract or pass from the infected mother to NB infant during birth.

most common cause, this disease is also associated with gonorrhea and chlamydial infection
and develops biphasic illness because of the longer incubation.

syndromes: a) 1st episode primary infection b) 1st episode non primary infection c) recurrent

HPV - ANS Assoc with cervical dysplasia, cancer, condylomata; HIGH risk strains cause cancer
(not warts); condylomata acuminata (genital warts) are associated with multiple sex partners
and HIGHLY contagious; can be transmitted to infant at birth;most common symptomatic STI.
HR-HPV is a high risk strain precursor to cervical cancer.

Molluscum Contagiosum - ANS benign viral infection of the skin, transmitted skin to skin
contact in children. In adults it tends to occur on genitalia and be transmitted by sexual contact.

Condylomata acuminata - ANS Genital warts which are sexually transmitted and highly
contagious. Velvety cauliflower-like lesions occur in the genital and anal areas, vaginal, and
cervix and are painless. Can be transmitted to infants at birth.

Trichomoniasis - ANS causes vaginitis in women and urethritis in men; WOMEN Vaginal
symptoms range from none to severe; vaginal discharge (copious, frothy, malodorous &
yellow/green to gray/green), internal itching, dysuria, vaginal appearance of erythema and
soreness. Sometimes strawberry spots (small, punctate red marks) are visual. Vaginal pH > 4.2.
MEN asymptomatic.

Scabies - ANS common parasitic infection that can be spread skin to skin contact and sexual
contact, The mites burrow into the skin depositing 2-3 eggs a day. INTENSE PRURITUS, esp at
night.
