, Describe 3 types of carpet weaves. - ANSWER 1.) Wilton - or jaquard loom, can produce complex
patterns and several types of surface textures - cut pile, level loop, cut/uncut, etc.
2.) Velvet - simplest form, generally produces solid colors but mult-colored yarns can be used.
3.) Axminster - made on modified jacquard loom that delivers different colored yar and different times -
has even cut pile surface but produces range of patterns and colors.
List the 2 primary ways to install stone flooring. - ANSWER 1.) Thinset - used when a uniform thickness of
stone is set on the subfloor with a special thinset mortar (1/8" thick or less) or with an adhesive - less
expensive, quick to install, adds less weight, and is suitable for thin stone floors with uniform thickness.
Can be placed on concrete or woood floor.
2.) Thickset- requires a layer of mortar 3/4" - 1 1/4" thick be applied to a prepared, structurally sound
subfloor - the stone is either set in semi-wet mortar or the mortar is allowed to cure and the stone is set
in another thin layer of dryset mortar on top of the first. Best way. Used when the subfloor and/or stone
are uneven. ie. slate or sandstone. Mortar bed can be bonded to the subfloor or separated by a clevage
membrane (steel mesh) that separates the stone so if the subfloor moves or deflects the stone floor so it
won't crack.
How is stone applied to a wall? - ANSWER 1.) Traditional - 3/4" thick slabs are attached to wall substrates
w/ stainless steel wires or ties. These are anchored to the substrate and hold the stone while lumps of
plaster of Paris are placed between substrate and stone panels to hold slab
2.) new Technology enables thin stone tiles that were cut or laminated to be mastic applied to a
substrate.
How is wood flooring graded? - ANSWER Wood flooring is graded based on how uniform the wood grain
is - first, second, and third grades. First is best.
Define curtains. - ANSWER Fabric hung within window frame and close to glass, not intended to be open.
Define drapery. - ANSWER Any loosely hung fabric that covers the window.
What are two important environmental issues that designers should be aware of when painting? -
ANSWER 1.) Lead based paint: any house built before 1978 may have lead-base paint - it's dangerous if it
flakes off is chewed on or is released into the air and ingested by occupants. Someone certified should
remove it or you can paint over it or install gypsum board over it sometimes.
