Gervaise n’aimait pas l’idée de se marier, car elle voulait économiser de l’argent.
Son fiancé, Coupeau, n’était pas d’accord avec elle. Il a voulu quelque chose de
simple, une petite promenade l’après-midi avec deux ou trois amis et, après, un
repas au restaurant de son ami. Il voulait manger et boire un petit peu, avant de
retourner à la maison. Cependant, Coupeau n’était pas riche. Coupeau a demandé
cinquante francs à son patron. Coupeau devait payer l’argent de retour dans trois
mois. Il a acheté une veste et un pantalon. Heureusement, ses vieilles chaussures
étaient encore bonnes.
