One of the reasons for the rise of partisan politics in the Early Republic was because of
the development of the First Party System. This system was the first time in American history
that there were two clear and organized political parties that would compete against one another
to win elected office. The Nation’s first political party system was in place after a race against
The Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. The Federalists, following the original
Federalists, supported the adoption of the United States Constitution. They also appreciated
strong central government that could benefit creating a centralized financial system. Whereas,
the Democratic Republicans worried that a centralized government could threaten individual
liberty and state’s rights. The Democratic Republicans also had a future vision of America that
included small farmers, and limited interference from a smaller federal government. During the
election of 1796, the Federalists and Democratic Republicans campaigned for presidential office,
ultimately having John Adams win presidency on behalf of the Federalist Party. But, in the 1800
election, Thomas Jefferson went on to win the presidency on behalf of the Democratic
Republicans. From this, the Nation’s first political party system had been established.

After the split of the First Party System in 1815, the Second Party System emerged in the
late 1820’s to 1850’s with the rise of the Democratic party competing against the Whig party, or
