C121 Task 3

1A. As a result of reconstruction, changes were made to race relations within the United States
in an attempt to better fix the damage that had been caused by the Civil War. The first legislation that
was introduced in an attempt to fix these relations was the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. This
amendment, passed in 1865, abolished slavery and gave Congress the power to enforce any appropriate
legislation. This finally allowed African Americans the ability to build a better quality of life and set all
slaves within the United States free. (Norton, 2015)

Additionally, education for African Americans was finally being sought out, as it was previously
only available to White Americans. This education often required tuition, and adults would attend at
night or after completing their work for the day. Children would also be encouraged to attend but would
often have to bring along infants. By 1877, the African American community saw a victory in the fact that
over 600,000 African American Children were enrolled in elementary school. (Norton, 2015)

Finally, a change in labor arrangements was made with the massive growth of sharecropping.
Often times, African American men were unable to purchase land, so they would work a farmer’s land in
exchange for food and housing. Once crops were ready to harvest, they were traditionally split evenly
between the landowner and the sharecropper. This eventually led to a decline in wealthy landowners in
the South as the demand for Cotton began to decrease. (Norton, 2015)

1B. As industrialization began to occur, not all outputs as a result of its existence were seen to
have a positive effect on the American Society. As it became easier to mass produce products through
invention, access to things such as cigarettes and mass-produced food became easier. These products
were detrimental to the health of those consuming them, even if they could not understand at the time
what the true cost was. In comparison, food that would normally go to waste by expiring was able to be
mass-produced into more stable foods. This meant that more poor Americans had access to additional
nutrients that they did not previously have. As a result, industrialization can be seen as both positive and
negative in regard to how it affected American society. (Norton, 2015)

Urbanization, which refers to the increasing number of individuals living in urban areas such as
cities, was another impact on society as a result of industrialization. As industry began to grow and
modernize it became more important for low-income Americans to live closer and closer to the area in
which they would work. As more and more industries began to grow in the United States, less and less
Americans made money by owning land and farming. Public transportation also began to grow during
this time, meaning the average American who could not afford other transportation would have a way to
and from work. All of these factors directly led to more and more urbanization as a direct result of
industrialization, changing the way that American society lived. (Norton, 2015)

1C. Protestant Ministers began a social movement known as The Social Gospel, which countered
capitalism with the thought “What would Jesus do?” This brought attention to issues such as helping
those who had nothing and resolving issues between industrial complex owners and its employees. In
addition, morality had a great impact on American society. The greatest impact on history caused by the
idea of morality was the Prohibition era, where moral reform led to the complete banning of any
production or sale of alcohol in the US, otherwise known as the 18th Amendment. (Norton, 2015)
