exam is usually very quick collection of samples to identify disease. The medical forensic exam is very
thorough and detailed looking for injury, collecting samples to identify DNA.
Is there a medical component to your exam? correct answersYes, I provide healthcare, I assess my
patient to identify injury other health concerns, document that assessment and communicate those
findings and recommendations to care for the medical provider. I provide resource information and
discharge instructions for my patient at discharge and follow up with my patient to address any ongoing
health concerns.
What are some of the recommendations you may make? correct answersRequest medication's to
prevent pregnancy, and or STI infections, recommend vaccinations, request mental health/crisis,
evaluations if needed, request, a school/work excuse for the patient, recommend therapy, recommend
follow up exam to address medical needs such as STI testing and injuries

urine that may be used for medical testing as needed for my patients I identify injury or medical issues, I
may provide immediate treatment, such as stopping bleeding or applying an ice pack. I may assist get
assistance from the ED with some of the treatment a patient may need, for example imaging to detect
injury when a patient reports strangulation, and or head injury.
What is the purpose of a medical forensic exam? correct answersTo gather a medical history, assess and
document physical exam findings, provide, or recommend interventions to provide care for current
findings, and to provide prophylaxis for anticipated adverse effects of the sexual assault. It's also an
opportunity to collect samples from the patient where DNA may be found. Also to provide
recommendations to minimize the adverse effects of sexual assault.
How are you notified that the patient was at the hospital? correct answersWe use an answering service.
Law-enforcement and/or the hospital call me through the answering service to notify me if a patient
needs a sexual/physical assault exam.
