Application of Ethical Leadership C206

Task 3

Munroe Fannin

Western Governors University

June 6, 2018

, Ethical Leadership 2

A1.

General Electric (G.E.) has a robust and efficient code of ethics and conduct policy called Spirit
and the Letter. This shows the commitment G.E. has to upholding and honoring the corporate
social responsibility that all companies are tasked with. They break down their code of ethics in
the following sections:

1. The Code: This section is G.E.’s Code of Conduct that is broken down into four points.
These four points are the pillars on which the rest of their policies and guidelines stand
and they are a quick and simple way to get the core values of the company established
so that all employees can understand them. Essentially, every policy in the Letter section
can be attributed to one of these four statements (Spirit and the Letter, 2018).
2. The Spirit: This section covers the essence of the code of conduct. It discusses who
should follow the policies, such as employees, directors, officers, subsidiaries, and
affiliates, along with what employees are expected to do and that is for employees to be
knowledgeable, aware, and committed, while also talking about the cost of
noncompliance. It states that leaders are expected to Prevent, Detect, and Respond, and
states how they are do perform each of those roles. They also talk about how to “be the
voice of integrity” (Spirt and the Letter, pg. 5) which covers how to raise a concern and
how G.E. handles those integrity concerns (Spirit and the Letter, 2018).
3. The Letter: The final section covers all of the detailed policies concerning ethics and
conduct. These policies cover many areas from, payments and money laundering, to
working with governments and conflict of interests. In all there are 16 policy titles. Each
one states the policy, the employee’s role, and examples or controls put in place (Spirit
and the Letter, 2018).

This document is a well created delivery of the code of ethics that GE has established to keep in
compliance of their corporate social responsibility. I do not find any areas that G.E. is lacking
and feel the design and delivery of the code of ethics makes it easy for employees to
understand and helps the company from top to bottom be more ethical.
