Ethics in Behavioral Health Practice
After exploring the Arizona state and local laws on the State of Arizona Board of
Behavioral Health Examiners Rules and Laws website and the American Counseling Association
Code of Ethics Resources website the policies were analyzed to determine if the associations are
complementary or adversarial. The importance of privacy, security, and confidentiality with
patient medical and health records can be violated if ethical principles are not in place.
Ethics
In all industries professional ethics are essential. Each individual in an industry has a role
and a responsibility. Ethics are the way to ensure any operation has a guide to how to handle the
many different situations that may arise. Ethical principles in the behavioral health field help
build a foundation of trust and professionalism. There can be unforeseen situations that occur in
the behavioral health field. Ethical principles provide behavioral health professionals with a
roadmap to better understand and be able to navigate through challenging situations.
State Law
To maintain and establish standards of performance and qualifications for licensed
professionals in the behavioral health field states regulate practice standards. “The Arizona
Board of Behavioral Health Examiners regulates minimum practice standards pursuant to Board
rules and statutes.” The laws and rules govern licensure and renewal requirements. There are also
complaint and disciplinary process for violations against professionals practices. Counselors can
have complaints filed against them when services that are being provided are not meeting the
minimum standards or the code of ethics.
