1a) Substitution, another reaction: CH4 + Cl2 to CH3(Cl) + HCL b) Addition, another reaction:
1-propene + Br2 to 1,2-dibromopropane. c) Reduction, another reaction: (CH3)2CO + H2 to
(CH3)2CH-OH. d) Esterification, another reaction: Acetic acid + ethanol to ethyl acetate +
water.

2a) Reaction: Oxidation, Family: Carboxylic acid. b) Reaction: Esterification, Family: Ester

3) The hydrocarbon chain is an unsymmetrical alkene which allows for two products. This
reaction will take place according to Markonivok’s rule which states that “the carbon with more
hydrogens will be electropositive and carbon with less hydrogen would be electronegative. The
electropositive part of the water molecule will go to the electronegative part of the double bond.
There are also 2 reagents which are H and OH, when the double bond breaks they will get
attached allowing for 2 products. The major product will be 2-methyl-heptanol because it fulfills
the Markonivok’s rule. b) Addition reaction.

4a) This reaction will proceed. Ethanol is a primary alcohol. Primary alcohol oxidize into
aldehyde which further oxidize into carboxylic acid which is another name for acetic acid.
b) This reaction is possible in the absence of an iron catalyst. One of the double bonds will break
and chlorine will attach itself to the structure.
c) This reaction is not possible because tertiary alcohols can’t be oxidized.

5) What type of polymer is polypropylene? Homopolymer It is created through what type of
reactions? Addition
