Interstitial fluid:
 About 20 L of fluid filters out of blood capillary walls to form interstitial fluid
 Fluid surrounds cells and tissues
 Contains less protein than blood plasma (proteins too big to go through capillary walls)
 17 L of interstitial fluid is reabsorbed in the venous ends of the capillaries
 The remaining 3 L must be returned to cardiovascular system by the lymphatic system
Lymphatic system functions:
 Complex drainage system
 Interstitial fluid is carried through, empties into the veins and becomes part of
blood plasma
 Transports lipids and lipid-soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) from digestive tract to blood
 Lymphatic system slows their entry into blood and allows even dispersion
throughout the body
 Contains cells that participate in the immune response
 Various types of white blood cells participate in body defense
Lymphatic system components:
 Lymph
 Lymphatic vessels
 Lymphatic tissue structures
 Red bone marrow

,Lymphatic vessels:
 Begin as lymphatic capillaries
 Originate in tissues and carry fluid that forms there
 Closed at one end and located between cells
 Slightly larger than blood capillaries and permit interstitial fluid to flow into the
vessel, however fluid cannot leave once in vessel
 Endothelial cells that compose lymphatic capillary walls overlap like shingles
 Lymphatic capillaries unite to form larger lymphatic vessels
 Structurally resemble veins
 However, walls thinner and more valves than veins
 Interstitial fluid entering here is called lymph
 Merge to form lymphatic ducts
Lymphatic ducts:
 Thoracic duct
 Main lymph collecting duct
 Receives lymph from several areas
 Left side of head, neck, chest
 Left upper limb
 Entire body under ribs
 Right lymphatic duct
 Drains lymph from upper right side of body
Lymphoid organs:
 Primary lymphatic organs
 Sites where stem cells divide and develop into mature T and B cells
 Red bone marrow
 Thymus
 Secondary lymphatic organs and tissues
 Most immune responses occur in these areas
 Lymph nodes
 Spleen
 Lymphatic nodules
 Lymphatic tissue
 Composed of reticular connective tissue containing many lymphocytes
