Question 1

a. The elderly is a group of people who may benefit from technologies. While life
expectancy of people increases so does the cost of support and care. It may now be
possible that technology can aid in their care.

Advances in modern technologies enable the ability to support the elderly where other
options are not possible. By using modern technology whilst going about their every day
lives it enables remote monitoring to ensure that they remain healthy and safe.

Indoor positioning is vitally important in reaching an elderly person in an appropriate time
to aid in any care. By using positioning you can quickly and accurately locate the person..
Activity recognition can aid in identifying dangerous situations that an elderly person
may find themselves in but also quickly raise alarm if the sensor detects an unusual or
sudden activity like a fall.

Smart watches enable real time vital sign monitoring by being worn on the body and
provide up to date tracking on their health.

b. There are several advantages to using cloud computing for care of the elderly such
as enabling remote care and data collection.

Remote health care through Human Computer Interaction (HCI) may enable medical care to
be triaged and assessed by smartphone. This may enable health care staff to assess more
elderly in a quicker time than driving to each and may prevent unnecessary travel for the
elderly where not required. By using cloud-based data collection it enables health staff no
matter where they are to access accurate details of an elderly patient which in turn may lead
to better care.

Disadvantages of cloud computing are the costs and constraints involved. Technology and, in
particular, smart phones and watches are not cheap so the financial burden to a care home
or a family should not be underestimated. There are also constraints in what the sensors can
identify especially in a smart phone and as such vital signs may not be possible to be
monitored.
