Questions and Answers
Expository Text - answer Students reading comprehension is affected by their ability
to identify and take advantage of text structure. There are two major text structures:
narrative and expository. Because this competency focuses on inquiry and research in
content areas, the primary focus of this discussion will be on expository text. There are
several text structures typically used in expository materials. Teacher's responsibility is
to help students identify the type of expository text being used. When students are
familiar with the organizational pattern of the text, comprehension increases

Problem-Solution - answer In a problem-solution structure, the text presents a
problem and then offers possible solutions, usually setting on one solution as best. Text
that discusses why rain forests should be saved or fossil fuels should be preserved are
examples of the problem-solution text structure

Description - answer In a descriptive expository text, the focus is on providing
specific details about a topic, person, event, idea. An example of expository text is a
description of the planets and their characteristics

Cause and effect relationships - answer In expository text using causing and effect
relationships, the text links events ( effects) with their causes. Cause and effect usually
has signal words that identify such a structure. Some common signal words are:
because, for, therefore, as a result, and consequently. Text that explains the causes of
the Revolutionary War or the concept of Plate Tectonics exemplify cause-effect
relationships.

Listing - answer In this type of Expository text, the author lists items or events in
numerical or chronological order. Cue words include: First, second, third, next, then and
finally. Text that outlines the steps of how a bill becomes a law follows this pattern

Sequencing - answer Expository text emphasizing, the information is presented in
order of occurrence, such as the events preceding an historical event or the steps to
follow scientific investigation. Signal words for sequencing are: first, second, then,
earlier, next, last and finally. Events in biography are written in the sequence pattern as
is science text that outlines the life cycle of organisms

Compare and contrast - answer Compare and contrast expository text highlights the
similarities and differences between two or more topics. Signal words for compare and
contrast texts are: Although, but, on the other hand, and however. An example of this
organizational pattern is text comparing vertebrates to invertebrates, such as Venn
diagram. Venn diagram are graphic organizers for students to create after reading
compare/contrast text.
