Insula→ interior cingulate

➢ How are pain and temp related
○ Interoceptive Pathway
■ Sensory receptors, the free nerve endings, from the skin come in through spinal cord
○ Nociceptive and Thermoreceptors
○ Warm and cold fibers
■ Temperature applied to skin
■ 34 is skin temp

■ Firing rate increases as temp decreases
○ In dorsal horn, there are multiple layers called lamina
■ Nociceptive Lamina 1: first layer, shallow → respond to different properties of stimulus. They
cross over and go to the primary interoceptive cortex which is the Posterior Insula
○ Different region of Posterior Insula for each of the specific receptors

● NS=nociception specific
● cool=cool
● HPC= hot,pinch, cool → dynamic range stimuli
■ This Insula is bigger ein humans
➢ Temperature and pain

, ○
○ Recordings of different lamina 1 cells
○ Immediate - fast pain : conducted by NS cells
○ Slower building pain - more intense : HPC cells
○ When it comes to higher temps, HPC and NS cells do same thing
○ When things get cold, different
○ HPC increases burning pain from hot (or cold) stimuli
■ When activated, feel burning
○ NS cells dont fire at all in cold stimuli
○ Cool cells will fire more in colder temps
○ As colder, HPC will fire linear increase, dont asymptote
○ Activation of cool cells inhibit sensation of burning pain
■ But when cool cells asymptote, their firing rate stays constant
■ At one point those cool cells cannot inhibit
○ COOL decreases burning pain from cold stimuli.
○ COOL inhibits HPC.
○ COOL reach asymptote as temp decreases.
○ HPC keep increasing as temp decreases.
○ COOL no longer inhibit HPC as temp decreases.
○ Burning pain from noxious cold will result.
○ This unpleasant feeling will motivate your body to act.
○ Interoception because perception of physiological state (core body temp) not
external temperature
○ the signal is that the inside of the body is getting colder than the outside of the body
■ Cool cells are shallower
● As temp decreases, they wont register colder
■ HPC cells are deeper
● They will continue to say colder because they are deeper
○ Meaning inside of body getting colder
➢ The thermal Grill Illusion
