Psychological interview for prospective foster
parents
1
, Interview Scenario
You are a psychologist at an orphanage called Habibia Children's Home in the Western Cape.
Prospective foster parents approach you daily, and you are responsible for formulating
interview questions in such a manner as to ensure the children are placed in good homes.
Due to your overbearing amount of responsibilities within the orphanage, management has
decided to employ three additional social workers to work as interviewers under your
supervision. It is crucial that these social workers be fully oriented before starting the job as
children's life's and well-being are at stake.
The prospective foster parents undergo a sifting procedure before reaching the interview
stage. This ensures that they are capable and qualified for the job to serve as authority figures
to these children. However, there have been unfortunate instances of abuse in the past. Thus,
the interview questions need to be structured in a specific manner in order to avoid the
placement of children in unhealthy living circumstances.
The following criteria are required of any new applicant to be successfully welcomed into our
system as foster parents:
• Prepared and available to supervise children when they are not in school or
participating in other supervised activities.
• Pass a criminal background test with no evidence of a criminal record.
• Should not currently be diagnosed with or in remission of psychological illness.
Applicants might be required to undergo a psychological examination.
• Have some flexibility in your schedule to accommodate the foster children's court-
ordered visits, therapy, medical appointments etc.
• Should have own transport and a valid driver’s license.
• Has to currently own or rent a reliable house/apartment with at least one extra
bedroom.
• If firearms or other weapons are owned and stored in the house, they are to be stored
unloaded in a locked cabinet and ammunition is stored and locked in a separate location
• Corporal punishment may never be used to discipline foster or adopted children.
