Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there
is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
The Cutting Edge coursebook is well-organized and easy to understand. It colourful, uses clear language and visuals like pictures and
diagrams to help students learn and stay interested. The book has clear headings and subheadings, so it's easy for students to find what
you need. It's a great resource for C1 level learners because it's designed to make learning fun and easy. The book introduces language
concepts step by step, so students can move from one topic to the next with ease.
As for the activities, the book has lots of interesting activities covering vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and the four language skills.
There are different types of activities to suit different learning styles, including traditional exercises and interactive tasks like role-plays
and discussions. The activities get gradually harder as students’ progress, keeping them engaged and motivated to learn. With a variety
of activities, all students can benefit, no matter how they prefer to learn.
The Cutting Edge coursebook is designed to match the skill level of C1 learners. It strikes a balance between being challenging enough to
keep students interested and engaged, while also ensuring that it doesn't overwhelm or frustrate them. The reading passages and
listening exercises are easy to understand and interesting, keeping students engaged. There are also harder vocabulary and language
concepts to help advanced learners improve their skills.
One of the strengths of the Cutting Edge coursebook is its emphasis on recycling and reviewing previously learned material. The book
provides numerous opportunities for students to practice and consolidate their language skills through a variety of exercises and
activities. These exercises not only reinforce newly acquired knowledge but also serve to revisit and reinforce concepts covered in earlier
units. By regularly revisiting and reviewing material, students have the chance to reinforce their understanding and internalize language
concepts more effectively. Moreover, the inclusion of tests such as quizzes, end-of-unit tests, and periodic evaluations ensures that
students' progress is regularly assessed, providing valuable feedback and identifying areas for further improvement. This comprehensive
,approach to recycling ensures that students develop a strong foundation in the language and are well-prepared for subsequent learning
challenges.
The material in the book is respectful of different cultures and includes content that students from diverse backgrounds can relate to.
There are images of people from various cultures, promoting inclusivity and making the material more engaging. This approach helps all
students feel represented and connected to the material.

I was completely calm and relaxed and everything until they started counting down.
It was like 10 minutes to release, three minutes to release, and then it was like the five second count, and I was so excited to feel that
release.
And I can't even explain the feeling that you get.
You feel like you're falling.
That's Anna Meyers, a student at the University of Aberdeen, who was on board the first ever Virgin Galactic flight for tourists.
She went on the once-in-a-lifetime trip with her mum Keisha after winning a competition.
They became the first mother-daughter duo to fly to space together in the process.

So how does it feel to experience zero gravity and be floating at an altitude of nearly 300,000 feet? And how does it feel to experience
all that with your mum?
I'm Nihal Arthanayake, a presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live, and these are some of the questions I asked Anna on my radio show.
This is 5 Minutes On, going to space with your mum.
01:08
Yeah, so I can't remember how many seconds it's for, but it does feel a little bit longer, personally, for me.
But it is a very exhilarating feeling. I can almost compare it to a rollercoaster, when you have that slight dip.
And so, you drop, and then the engine fires, and you're slightly pushed back into your seat.
None of it is uncomfortable at all, though. It's surprisingly very comfortable.
And so, we accelerate past the speed of sound, and then we're basically in space.
And you get to unstrap and look out the window, and it's the most peaceful feeling ever.
So, when you unstrap, what is that feeling like?
To me, it felt a bit strange, because you can't really imagine what weightlessness feels like. And I think a common misconception is
that we think that we have a lack of senses.
But you still feel everything the same way that you normally would.
You just realize that you're a little bit lighter than you usually would be, which is a very confusing feeling.
But it adds to the atmosphere. It adds to the peacefulness of the entire experience.
