Determination of Concentration of HCl
Acid Questions and Answers
Chemicals Involved & Hazards: - answer NaHCO3 (s), Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate
-Currently not classified as hazardous.
HCl (aq), Hydrochloric Acid
-Currently not classified as hazardous.
H2O (l), distilled water
-No hazard classification.
Methyl Orange Indicator Solution
-No hazard at this concentration.

Health & Safety: - answer Follow safety procedure = Wear eye protection
throughout.

Method Part 1: Making up a standard 0.100moldm-3 NaHCO3 (aq) solution... - answer
1. Using a weighing boat, accurately weigh 2.10g of NaHCO3 (s). Transfer the solid to a
clean, dry 100cm3 beaker. Rinse the weighing boat with distilled water into the beaker.
2. Add enough distilled water to dissolve the solid, stirring a glass rod. (Decanter if
necessary).
3. Transfer the solution to a clean 250cm3 volumetric flask, using a funnel. Rinse the
beaker, glass rod and funnel with distilled water and include the rinses into the
volumetric flask.
4. Make up to just below the mark with distilled water, insert the stopper, and slowly
invert several times to mix thoroughly.
5. Make up the solution to the mark, insert stopper, and invert several times to mix
thoroughly.

Method Part 2: Finding the concentration of HCl solution by titrating with the standard
solution... - answer 6. Transfer your standard solution to a clean, dry beaker and
label it.
7. Use a pipette and pipette filler to transfer 25.0cm3 of this solution to a 250cm3
conical flask.
8. Add a few drops (remember no.) of methyl orange to the flask.
9. Using the funnel, rinse then fill the burette with the hydrochloric acid provided.
10. Titrate the NaHCO3 (aq) with the HCl (aq), with constant swirling, until the end point
is reached (yellow to orange). This is trial titration.
11. Repeat your titration accurately until you have two concordant results. Wash the
conical flask with distilled water to repeat. You may wish to keep the solution from your
first accurate titre in order to achieve consistency by colour matching.
12. Ensure that you have recorded all of your results, with burette readings to the
nearest 0.05cm3.
