One major way that Patagonia has been able to promote corporate social
responsibility among other businesses is by becoming a founder member of
the Fair Labor Association in 1996. The FLA is an “independent multi-
stakeholder verification and training organization” (Patagonia , n.d.) that
audits the factories Patagonia pays to produce their products to identify and
resolve labor issues. taking part in gathering together the top leaders in the
apparel industry, nongovernmental organizations, and US Environmental
Protection Agency to form the Sustainable Apparel Coalition. They work
together to create “An apparel industry that produces no unnecessary
environmental harm and has a positive impact on the people and the
communities associated with its activities” (Patagonia , n.d.).
Additionally, Patagonia educates and markets its core value of making the
best products while recycling materials to help save the planet, and they
“strive to be a role model and seek to collaborate.” This has allowed
Patagonia to partner with and influence other businesses such as Ikea, which
“started a program to buy back and resell furniture” (Richards, 2021).
I do think it is beneficial for Patagonia to branch out into ventures other than
apparel because it allows the company the opportunity to make help make
changes and progress on living work wages in other areas of business across
multiple countries. As a founder of the FLA, they work towards increasing
“worker wages without jeopardizing the competitiveness” (Patagonia, n.d.)
and “increasing worker involvement in workplace and health safety”
(Patagonia, n.d.), which increases “engagement and confidence of
workers” (Patagonia, n.d.). I think branching out and educating others on
their FLA procedures, allow them to establish more partnerships and further
strengthen their goal of working in unison to make better products while
saving the planet.
