Titration Lab Report

Purpose: Explore the concentration of an acid by titrating it with a base of known concentration.

Question: How can the strength of an acid be determined using titration?

Hypothesis: If you know the volume and concentration of a base that completely neutralizes an acid, then you
can determine the concentration of the acid because, at the point of neutralization, the number of moles of acid
equals the number of moles of base.

Summary: Using a 0.200 M solution of NaOH, I titrated until I neutralized a sample of HCl acid solution. Then I
calculated the unknown concentration of the HCl solution. I then repeated this procedure three times and found
the average concentration.

Extra Info:
Analyte + Titrant → Salt + H2O(l)
HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)

Data:
Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3

Initial buret volume 0.24

Final buret volume 20.85

Volume dispensed 20.61 20.06 19.67

Initial buret volume 0.05

Final buret volume 12.54

Volume dispensed 12.49 12.32 11.87

concentration 0.200 0.200 0.200

Mol of titrant 0.0025 0.0025 0.0024

Mol of analyte HCl 0.0025 0.0025 0.0024

Concentrated of analyte 0.121 0.125 0.122
HCl x (M)

Average concentration of analyte = 0.123 M

Percent error of concentration = 2.5%

Conclusion:
The data supports the hypothesis, using the volume and concentration that neutralizes an acid we were able to
determine the concentration of the acid.
