BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport
Unit 26: Work-Based Experience
Preparing for a Work-Placement in Sport
Task 1
Scenario: As you end up finishing studying and parents keep on nagging you on getting a job to gain
income, you after entering in the world of the workplace to a new career or pursue Higher
education. But as the time is coming closer I’m still unsure on what I really want to do, so I have
ended up on taking up and doing my research on job roles that are out there in the world of
workplace and I have found 4 types that interest me! Which am interested in and would like to take
up work experience in the sectors in order to get a better insight and most important get valuable
development, some new knowledge and skills.
And evaluate your option (why have you picked it)
1) Lifeguard - Sports centre (Workington leisure centre GLL)
(address)
The Role as a lifeguard would be to maintain the safety of the participates in the pool around the
pool and in an emergency you would after to be prepared to rescue them. For example, you see a
grown man drowning, you would need to dive in the pool and get the person out of the water, and
potentially do CPR depending what state the person is in for example if not breathing you will need
to perform it and if breathing then you don’t. This would be the requirement that you must do
within the job. Also checking levels of PH in the water must be checked, also health and safety
checks must be completed regularly in order to check in order so that it would be able to use by the
public. There are multiple sports centres across the UK the company that I would like to do it with is
GLL. Which is a fast-growing company around the UK. There are multiple centres located around
Cumbria and I live close to a couple.
The reason that I would like to have my work placement around the swimming pool is that I live
close to the sports centres, so the travelling for me will be easy as the travelling will not be difficult,
which means that I will be able to attend the place and have the opportunity to do it! The second
reason that I have picked it, is that as a lifeguard, it will allow me to cover my work placement hours
as I mentioned and I would have a good opportunity there because it’s accessible for me and I’m
interested in it. Not last but not least is that this work experience would allow me to get an insight in
what a lifeguard is all about and how important some of the roles are, for example as a lifeguard
that you after be always alert and watch over everyone as people will rely on you if there is an
emergency. If I was given this opportunity I would be able to develop new experiences, skills that I
could take with me everywhere after I finish the work placement.
2) Gym instructor - (Xtreme fitness)
(Address)
Gym instructor role has many types of responsibilities such as helping others to set goals to help
them achieve their goals, create training programmes, then monitoring their progress, not to
mention deliver fitness classes to the public. This are some of the roles that a gym instructor would
after do, which is really good as this require person to be flexible in different areas and having a pack
of knowledge for such role as it requires you to do a lot of things also having the skill set for the job
will be big, as I mentioned you will after know a lot and possess a lot of knowledge that you can
share with other clients.
