1842, America thought about annexing Hawaii but because we were in an economic depression we
decided not to. In 1875, the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 created a stronger relationship between the US
and HI,which led to more Americans being in HI, all Hawaiian goods going to US were tax free, and
investments increased in Hawaiian plantations. The King of HI likes this bc the investments expands jobs
and property taxes. Because the US has money invested in HI, the US sets up a naval base in HI, pearl
harbor. IN 1887, anyone who owned land in HI could vote for Hawaiian government. Since many
Americans owned plantation land, Americans had a lot of power and this created the voting block called
Bayonette Constitution. In 1890, the McKinley Tariff said to either give reciprocity with the US or have
, tariffs (60% on sugar). Cuba gives reciprocity and now has more investments. This new relationship with
Cuba ended the Hawaii's advantages. in 1891, the King dies and HI has a new Queen. She wants to
change the constitution so that Americans no longer have too much power. Now only Hawaiian citizens
who own property can vote. She also redistributed the land that was previously owned by Americans. In
1893, the bayonette militia and US marines staged a coup with the Queen. During the coup, HI
announced that they are now a republic. The new president, Sanford Dole, wanted Grover Cleveland to
annex the new republic of HI. He said no but recognizes the new republic. IN 1898, McKinley opened
new markets and HI was officially annexed. Hawaiian citizens are now US citizens. In 1959, HI became
the 50th state of the US.
