Exam 1 CSES 1010 Questions and

Answers 100% Solved

What is your definition of soil? - ✔✔-"the surface material and/or organic

layer of the earth that has experienced some degree of physical, biological,

and chemical weathering"

-unconsolidated material covering earth's surface

-contains mineral and organic components

-holds water

-supports living organisms

-changes with time (weathering)

-contains sand, silt and clay

Ultisols - ✔✔These are the "ultimate" in soil formation. These are highly

weathered, acidic, low fertility soils typical of most of Alabama and the

Southeastern U.S. These soils support forests and long-lived perennials.

Mollisols - ✔✔These are relatively young soils with a "mollic" or crumbly

epipedon (surface layer). They are generally formed in grasslands and are

some of the most agriculturally productive soils in the world. We have no

Mollisols in Alabama but they are extensive in Iowa, Nebraska, the

Dakotas, Kansas and Illinois.

Aridisols - ✔✔Arid soils. Soils that developed under very dry conditions

and are usually very high in soluble salts (e.g. Ca, Mg, K, and Na).

Inceptisols - ✔✔"Inceptual soils" or very young soils with little soil profile

development. These are usually found on steep slopes or in river bottoms.

Entisols - ✔✔Soils with little or no soil profile development. Many of

these are deep sands such as the sand hills of Nebraska or the Carolina

Sand Hills or the central ridge in Florida.

Spodisols - ✔✔Soils with a "spodic" horizon (an organic layer within the

soil profile. Spodisols occur in coarse-textured (sandy) soils dominated by

coniferous or other vegetation that contributes large amounts of soluble

organic acids to the soil surface.

Histosols - ✔✔Organic soils developed usually under wet conditions.

"Hist" comes from the root meaning "tissue". Found in the Florida

Everglades south of Lake Okeechobee and scattered in the northern U..S.

and Canada. None in Alabama.
