Brief History of Barnard 1 - answer Barnard was founded in 1889 and named for
Frederick A.P. Barnard, the 10th President of Columbia University. Barnard began at
343 Madison Avenue with 14 students and 6 faculty members. For over 120 years
Barnard has maintained a unique position as the premiere institution for educating
women in NYC and is the most sought-after women's college in the nation (and is the
only women's college to offer Division 1 athletics)

Brief History of Barnard 2 - answerIn 1890, Barnard was included in the educational
system of Columbia University with unique provisions: while Barnard was governed by
its own Trustees, Faculty and Dean, and was responsible for its own endowment, it also
shared the facilities, the instruction, the libraries, and the degree with Columbia
University. We are not only financially independent from Columbia university, but we are
unique from other undergraduate colleges in our mission and educational philosophy.
Nine years later, Barnard and Columbia both moved to Morningside Heights

Brief History of Barnard 3 - answerToday, Barnard enrolls about 2,400 undergraduates,
representing nearly every state and more than 40 different countries. The student to
faculty ration is 7:1. The first year class size averages about 590 students and in each
academic year approximately 100 students transfer to Barnard

Introduction to the Quad 1 - answerThe Quad is the most concentrated area of
residential students at Barnard. Over 1,000 students live in these four buildings

Introduction to the Quad 2 - answerIn addition to serving as home to many Barnard
students, the following student services are located in the Quad: Counseling Services,
Disability Services, and Well-Woman were all recently renovated and are located in the
Student Services Wing on the first floor of Hewitt. The location provides convenience
and privacy.

Introduction to the Quad 3 - answerThe main dining facility is located in the lower level
of Hewitt. Hewitt Dining Hall features regular, vegetarian, and kosher meal plans.
Students can also eat at the cafeteria in the Diana Center or at Liz's place, which we will
see later. Students can buy dining dollars for use on either Barnard or Columbia's
campus

Residential Life at Barnard 1 - answerHousing is guaranteed for first-year students for
all 4 years and over 90% of students live on-campus. Residential Life contributes
greatly to the larger sense of community at Barnard

, Residential Life at Barnard 2 - answerThe residential life experience for first-years
revolves around the First-Year Focus program, which coordinates a variety of "extended
orientation" programming throughout the academic year. Some examples of these are
study breaks, campus-wide events, and educational programs

Residential Life at Barnard 3 - answerFirst-year students are housed mainly in
Sulzberger, Reid, and Brooks Halls, where they will live in either a double, triple, or
quad style room, while upper-class students are housed in Brooks and Hewitt Halls.
These are all traditional corridor/hallway-style residence halls. After their first year,
students enter a lottery system, and they have the option of living in an apartment
building, corridor, or suite-style residence facilities. All residence halls at Barnard are
smoke free, as is the entire Barnard Campus

Dorm Room 1 - answerMention that the first years live in either a double, triple, or quad.
Allow visitors to peek around the room

Dorm Room 2 - answerStudents are hand-matched with their roommates by ResLife
after filling out an extensive personal questionnaire to facilitate the roommate match-up.
We are one of the only colleges in the nation that still does this! Students are matched
based on their personal priorities, and Barnard is known to do a great job pairing
roommates.

Walking Back to Elevators 1 - answerThere is at least one bathroom on each corridor,
and one is all-female and the other is co-ed.

Walking Back to Elevators 2 - answerThere is at least 1 laundry room on each floor

Walking Back to Elevators 3 - answerThere is a lounge on each floor with a microwave,
stoves for light cooking, and a TV with cable (housing for upper-class students often
includes a common area and /or full kitchen)

Security/Public Safety 1 - answerAll guests-friends, family, male, female-must be signed
in by a resident and they must leave a valid picture ID with the desk attendant

Security/Public Safety 2 - answerAll residence halls are staffed with desk attendants
24/7. Students with a valid Barnard ID and a residence hall sticker may enter the
building upon showing their ID card to the desk attendant.

Security/Public Safety 3 - answerAccording to the NYPD, Morningside Heights is one of
the safest precincts in Manhattan

Security/Public Safety 4 - answerAdditionally, it is important to note how much of a
neighborhood Morningside Heights really is. MOHO is often called an "Academic
Acropolis," with the highest concentration of educational and religious institutions in the
world (nearby are Columbia, Manhattan School of Music, JTS, Bank Street College of
