Marine Documentary Notes :
( Marine Mammal Captivity )
Pros
- Captivity enables showcases for the public
- Brings people from all over together to enjoy marine life
- Inspires children & opens opportunity for aquatic jobs in the future
- To this day in modern times, no other orca incidents have occurred
- Orcas understand their parenthood, love their community, and value family over anything, though
they have massive aggression if agitated
- In a study energy scanner, orca’s have a part of the brain humans don’t have, it’s a cavity of pure
emotion that makes each moment of their life much more in depth and heartfelt.
- Their natural behavior is being social, isolation is not a good factor
- They possess spiritual power and are not to be meddled with or taken for human satisfaction.
- It’s about respect & not exploitation
- Endangered species moved to centers in order to aid and save the species
- Protection from predation
- There’s been an international whaling ban since 1986
- Whales & dolphins when going up to the surface reliance phytoplankton which absorb several
amounts of carbon dioxide and produce the majority of the world’s oxygen.
Cons
- Wild animals are unpredictable, it’s unsafe for human to be in such so close contact despite
training
- Too dangerous
- Captivity can lead to animal changes in behavior, more frustration, anger, loss of identity or
mental estate
- Hunters were doing illegal work and were banned out of Washington due to a court case
- The work to gather the whales in the wild sometimes took a toll on the hunters bc they’re taking
children or the young from their parents
- Animals were deprived of food, animals would fight and be raked due to frustration, mainly from
the older organisms.
- The acts from the staff may have led to animal synopsis because they are intelligent but were
“neglected and deprived in a sense”. The act was inhumane and the staff today are aware and
stated that it “didn’t feel good.”
- There was a lack of space in the tanks, along with a big whale that is the biggest to be recorded.
, - Newspapers stated that the diver who was killed was “drowned” when in reality she was pulled
down by Tilikum the whale.
- After the innocent, there were no lawsuits etc. etc., the facility brought back the whale because
they needed a breeder but no showcasing.
- The orcas have as much intelligence as a near human, they set examples for their young and
understand how to unite & compromise.
Cons
- He spent too much time in isolation unlike the other whales because he was less mobile, he was too big &
took up too much space, so the other whales would attack him
- The first day Tili arrived he was attacked by the other whales because there’s stat rules in the community
such as males and females or how much space etc. etc. and those were broken, so he was raked several
times all over the body.
- Management told recorders of Tili and human interaction for random reasons to get rid of all tapes because
they're not usable.
- Management instructed them to get away from the whale without reason, but there was stuff they never told
them.
- Staff often wondered why they were there and whether what they were doing was a good thing or bad.
They felt naive
Cons
- They separated children whales from those bred in the facility, it was to take Takara to Florida
because she was too disruptive during shows trying to out show her mother. After the separation,
the mother stayed at the corner of the pool ,screeching, screaming, and crying and never moving
due to such modifiable grief. Other whales would come to check in on her, then run back, but it
was the same pattern continuously.
- Most trainers knew nothing about orcas, but just marine life.
- Some animals have died in captivity due to animal violence
- During the country meeting over the prohibition of whaling and slaughter of dolphins, the
government allowed it in order to regulate the fish population in the waters because dolphins &
whales are consuming too much, making the fisheries decline in profit.
- With plastic being thrown into the seas, it’s killing all sorts of marine life. 29 whales alone in
Europe washed up to shore due to swallowing too much.
- Japan is deciding to start up whaling once again in the arctic, but the main deal is if the ocean
dies, so do we.
- Dolphins were being blamed for Taji’s overfishing industry, killing dolphins when they weren't
meeting training & captivity requirements caused for “pest control”. When in reality it was an
excuse to hide/protect their billion dollar industries.
- Shark species are on a steady decline by about 70%, along with blue fin tuna being at less than
3% of its population.
- There’s over 4,600,000 fishing vessels, to which the government had given up on enforcing.
