Contraindications/Risks for Guasha
Extremely deficient patient or injury has bruises or abrasions
Contraindications/Risks Moxibustion
Excess syndrome and heat syndrome (including high fever caused by common cold or
heat d/t yin deficiency)

Contraindications/Risks Tui Na
Hemorrhagic disorders, acute infections, cancer/tumors (Massaging cancerous area
might spread cancerous cells), DVT (deep vein thrombosis red flag - over 60, smoker,
overweight, sits a lot - symptoms leg pain, leg fatigue, warm skin, visible leg veins, skin
discoloration, leg edema. Massage might loosen clot trigerring HT attack/stroke),
Warfarin d/t easy bruising, chemo/radiation therapy area, hypertension (ask doctor),
varicose veins, wounds, recent scars, contagious diseases (chicken pox, measles, flu,
shingles), osteoporosis, spine injuries, bone diseases that might lead to bone fracture.
Caution with patients with osteoporosis, medicated, serious mental diseases (manic
depression, schizophrenia). Not contraindicated: HIV patients (except later stages of
AIDS who can have infectious such as herpes zoster, skin infections). Only light,
relaxing massages for HBP patients (get permission from doctor if BP is not controlled)
Tuina is contraindicated in 1 st trimester pregnancy or IVF in vitro fertilization to avoid
miscarriage (especially with history of miscarriages). Avoid massaging abdomen of
pregnant women. Some say not contraindicated in pregnancy after 5th month on
abdomen & lower back

Wear Gloves
Tap skin surface vertically with flexible movement of wrist. Head of instrument should
strike @ right angle to surface vs obliquely. Distribute force equally among needles and
prevent single needle from puncturing skin
Contraindications for Intradermal Needles
Skin dx, purpura or scarring, large blood vessels on body surface, pregnant women or
those with metal allergies
