Exam 2 Study Guide

Possible ID Terms:
Andrew Jackson  Jackson, born in 1767, was an experienced military man, not a politician, but
there were still many political attacks that existed against him. His opponents tried to aggress
him and desert him from regiments. Along with that, he has also been in a series of duals, which
hurt his reputation even more. Jackson was mostly known for the election of 1824 where he
became president. People don’t like Jackson because he starts the Indian Removal campaign and
because he introduces the spoil system where he would give his friends positions in the
government. Jackson also introduces the Jacksonian Era, where the president is a modern man
and the politics also become more modern.
Articles of Confederation  The purpose of this document was to create a legal government in
which they took 13 separate colonies and unite them, all sharing the power. It was created after
they came out of the war with Britain and was not fully ratified until 1781. After the war, the
power between the states and the union was then decided that the federal government has
jurisdiction over war and foreign relations and that the states had the jurisdiction over inner
police problems. It was also declared that the states are not required to give tax. Then, issues
with representation were brought up and so big and small states compromised that each state gets
2 senators and that the house of representatives depended on the size of the population. Another
law created was that if a person is convicted in one state, they are also convicted in other states.
Lastly, as every state had to agree with the laws put in this document, the revision of these
articles proved to be difficult.
Baron von Steuben  In 1730, the Continental Army desperately needed organization, and so
they decided to get help from abroad. Von Steuben is from German descent and was a member of
Fred the Great ‘s military staff. When the Americans go to Paris to ask for help, von Steuben
offers his services for free. When he arrives in the US in 1778, he is sent to Valley Forge. As he
does not speak English, he trains his soldiers by writing down the drills in French which is then
translated. Von Steuben was liked by the soldiers and was a key commander of Yorktown in
1781, where there was a massive surrender of the British. Von Steuben resigns in 1784 and gets a
pension: an estate in New York. Von Steuben was a key to the army, he encouraged the love one
has of a country to keep people in the army. America could not have won without interjection of
discipline and that along with organization only came to the army over time and with external
intervention. Moreover, the ideology of liberty made raising and controlling an army difficult.
Boston Massacre  In the winter of 1770, there were many clashes between soldiers and
artisans. Soldiers were idle, but still there in case something happens. Thomas Preston sends
soldiers and so they along with the people living there increase in numbers. When shots fire, the
1st person killed is Christmas Adams, a mix-raced soldier, and 5 people were killed in total.
Preston and his men are then sent to jail. Testimonies are taken from both sides and sent to
London. Preston claims he didn’t tell the soldiers to load their guns and that the soldier who shot
first was hit by a snowball and therefore shot his gun. On the other hand, soldiers said they fired
because they heard someone say “Fire”. In 1770, British soldiers who shot their guns went to
court in the colonies with John Adams representing them and getting them acquitted.
Common Sense  It was written by Thomas Paine and published in 1776. It was majorly
popular and considered the biggest pamphlet of the time, it sold over 100,000 copies over a year.
Paine becomes a supporter of the Patriots cause, believing that the British monarchy is a terrible
system. Whereas the system is supposed to balance the power between the king and the people,

the king is tyrannical. In his pamphlet he questions why one should have a king if people have to
check he doesn’t abuse his power. He states that America is better off without Britain and that
Britain will not be able to take America over, so he believes America should fight for its
independence.
Continental Army  It was created in 1775 by the Continental Congress, but it was hard to form
because of the emphasis on freedom produced in society as soldiers have to follow orders. At
first, soldiers fight and then go home where they live life as normal, but the problem was that not
enough people signed up for service and those who did enlist did so for a short period of time
and often didn’t come back. Additionally, forced enlistment was unpopular as it went against
people’s freedoms. Consequently, Washington starts signing people up for 3 years. Washington
later goes to Boston, where the soldiers are, but men are shooting their guns, and everything is in
disarray. The soldiers don’t know how to aim, they refuse to wash their clothes or bathe, and
their horrible sanitation creates “the Itch,” a disease that starts to spread among the soldiers.
Soldiers also face homesickness and anxiety and some run away as a result. In 1777, the
continental congress sends a quota that they need more men and so they start pulling names out
of a hat and draft those who are picked, but this process was more local than national and was
extremely unpopular. The army also had camp followers who were women that do support work
for army, such as washing clothes and nursing injured men. Washington recognizes the women’s
service, but they get no pensions after the war. After the war, the government is not tyrannical
and not military-centered.
Cotton Gin  Eli Whitney created it in 1793 Two people can now clean cotton in a day when
normally it takes 100 people, making the process much faster. The yield of cotton doubles each
decade after 1800. ¾ of world’s cotton produced in the US. The work is done by slaves and
production is driven through threats and violence. As the tobacco production is declining, most
of the slave states have now turned to producing cotton. As the demand for clothing increases so
does cotton.
Cult of Domesticity  This is created inside the home in the mid 19th century. It was the idea
that women don’t do any work outside of home, thus they do not own any money. Women’s job
is to instill virtues onto their children and so ideas about child bearing and education start
changing from having to break a child’s will and make it complaint to persuading them to do
something. In the 19th century, women also start teaching their children self-discipline. This leads
to Susan B Anthony and Cady Stanton to get involved in the women’s rights movement. This
also leads to women fighting for suffrage rights.
Declaratory Act  In 1766, this act is created in place of the Stamp Act as it had created a lot of
controversy and anger in colonies. This act restates Parliament’s ability to tax and make laws for
the colonies without the colonists’ intervention.
Election of 1800  During this election, Adams and Jefferson were both eligible to become
president. However, no one likes Adams even though he was elected as president in 1796 and
was in office for 4 years. After this election, Jefferson is elected as president and Adams is the
vice president. However, because of their opposing ideas the election process starts to change.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton  Born in 1815, Cady Stanton was the most prominent supporter of
women’s rights. She grew up having a wealthy family and being informally educated by her
father. She later married a man named Henry, an anti-slavery speaker, with whom she had 7
children together. Cady Stanton was also a writer and after the civil war she starts traveling and
becomes well known. She became the president of the national women’s suffrage association. At
