What is exam 1 going to be tested on? - ANSWERExams will be held at the conclusion of units 4 & 8.
Since the course materials are information intensive, each exam will be specific to the materials of
the present section, not comprehensive. Many concepts that are developed in the early segments,
however, will remain relevant throughout the course, especially those that represent continuously
evolving threads.
The exams consist of a mix of multiple choice, essay and listening response questions. For the
listening responses, the student could be expected, on the basis of observation, to identify the
components of the music. These components may include style, form, probable performer, and
probable time period. Listening, then, is an essential part of the coursework, and you cannot do well
in this course if you have not spent time applying active/critical listening skills to the music contained
in the lectures.
Unit 1 What are musical forms? - ANSWERThe 12-bar blues is one of the most common musical
forms in the history of rock. Lyrically, the form can take on a variety different aspects. From the
lecture, we learned that "Red House" by Jimmy Hendrix followed a "floating verses" strategy while
other song may use a "simple verse-chorus". Typically the 12- bar blues has a 4/4 bar and is made up
of 12 verses.
As an example to the 12 bar blues, I have chosen the song by The Beatles called "Can't Buy Me Love".

Unit 1 What are melodies? - ANSWERA melody in a piece of music is crucial at is a series of pitches
that are performed one after the other. When you think of songs, you are probably thinking about
the melody
Unit 1 What is a harmony? - ANSWERHarmony and harmonic progression can be used
interchangeably because harmony can refer to either a chord or a progression of chords. A
progression of chords is in fact called harmonic progression.
Unit 2 Of the guitarists discussed in the Plug it in, turn up lecture, which do you like the best? Why? -
ANSWERI chose Charlie Christian because at the time no one was playing the guitar like he was. He
had a certain tone that could not be duplicated. The guitar was not a lead instrument, it was mostly
part of the rhythm section, Charlie Christian broke that barrier and opened up many doors for future
guitarists like B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix.
Unit 2
Based on your knowledge to date, do you consider "Rocket 88" a rock 'n' roll song? Please support
your position for or against. - ANSWERBased on what I know as rock n roll music, I believe Rocket 88
could be considered early rock n roll. It is not the same as Led Zeppelin or The Beatles per say but it
does have the makings to be a rock n roll song. The addition of the keyboard and guitars in the
, background add to the rock n roll feel of the lyrics. It may be old but it definitely is rock n roll in my
mind.
Unit 2
What advantages might independent record labels have over larger companies? How might these
advantages impacted the type of music recorded? - ANSWERSome of the advantages of independent
record labels are that artists that sign with independent labels are allowed to keep the rights to their
music, which means that they can do whatever they want with it. Larger companies are usually
backed by corporations, while independent record labels are not, and the larger companies do not
let the artists keep the rights to their music. Owning the rights to your own music is a huge
advantage because it means that you can use it for things that you want to such as selling it for
commercials, movies, to accompany certain products, and so on. Another advantage of an
independent label over a big company is that usually independent labels allow their artists to keep
more money than larger companies do, larger companies take more for themselves and give their
artists less. These advantages might have impacted the type of music independent labels (indie
records) recorded because independent versus larger companies attract two very different types of
people who are willing to sign with them and depending on the artists that you sign depends on the
music you are going to produce with them.
Unit 2
The Rocket 88 lecture discusses the impact radio had on Ike Turner's musical development. What
other forms of technologies have further assisted the changes and evolutions in music? -
ANSWERThere are many forms of technology that have assisted the evolution of music but I think
the most important one especially recently is the computer. With Autotune any song can be altered
to sound better and sometimes artists who do not even have good voices are popular because of
Autotune. Many artists owe their career to Autotune and it is obvious which ones they are when you
attend their concerts.
Unit 2
If the electric guitar was never invented, how might music today be different? Imagine what a pop
song today might sound like without this step in the evolution of musical technology and present it
here. - ANSWERif the electric guitar was never invented, songs would have a more mellow tone. The
electric guitar adds a distinct sharp and exciting sound that makes music more intense. Without this,
most songs would have a more acoustic listen to them and would probably not be as up-beat and
intense as the electric guitar version. A good example of this is the song "Ignorance" by Paramore.
The singer uses her voice to try and intensify the song more, but it comes off as very different than
the original. I will post the original song with the electric guitar and the acoustic version where you
will be able to hear the difference.
Unit 2
Charlie Christian appears briefly in the Swing, Jump and Boogie! lecture. Do some outside research (a
google search will do!) and present something you found interesting/liked. - ANSWERSomething I
found interesting about Christian is the vast amount of influence he had on the transition from swing
music to bebop. What I liked about this type of music after listening to the video above was that,
rather than swing music which people could easily dance to, bebop was characterized by
improvisation. Rather than being played at a calm pace, this music is played at a much faster tempo,
which makes the ability of Christian to improvise guitar solos in such fast-paced music very
