An administrative staff headed by a board-appointed executive director
(Andrew Funk) assists board members.
Responsibilities: licensing pharmacists, administering a CE program for
pharmacists, regulating the legal distribution of Rx, CS, and precursor
substances, registering technicians/interns/PSPs/PIC for nonresident
pharmacies, performing compliance investigations and audits, and instituting
disciplinary actions.
The general public may obtain information, submit requests or complaints
relative to pharmacy practice via correspondence with the executive director.
All meetings are open to the public unless there is a closed session. This
requires an affirmative vote by either 2/3 of the board members or all present
members at the meeting. Special meetings may be called by the chairperson or
by written request by four of its members. The executive director takes minutes
at meetings and keeps a record.

There may be up to 7 alternative board members to substitute when there is
an insufficient amount of members available to participate in a contested case
hearing. They are subject to approval by the governor.
Terms for both board members and alternates last 3 years and they may be
appointed for up to 9 years total.
What is required prior to engaging in pharmacy practice? Answer - An active
Iowa pharmacist license and a criminal history record check.
Upon initial licensure application the board shall provide a fingerprint packet
the the applicant who must then submit that with a waiver facilitating the
background check.
Licensure by examination Answer - 2 components: NAPLEX and MPJE, IA
Edition. A totaled score of >/= 75 is required for each.
Must pass both exams within one year of passing the first component. A waiver
may be requested for variance from this deadline.

Application for Examination:
, Complete all requested info on form. The applicant must also declare Hx or
prior pharmacist licensure examinations and record of offenses that may affect
the licensees ability to practice. The app is a sworn statement.
College graduation certification must be provided by an individual authorized
by the recognized (accredited) college of pharmacy (may be a bachelors or
PharmD) on a board form. Foreign pharmacy graduates of an unrecognized
school of pharmacy must obtain FPGEC.

Internship Requirements Answer - Each applicant, except for those applying
for license transfer must provide evidence certifying completion of satisfactory
internship experience.
These shall be valid for licensure in IA for licensure by examination or score
transfer for 3 years following graduation. May be approved otherwise in a case-
by-case basis.
Reexamination Application and Fees Answer - If you fail either exam once, you
can schedule a time to retake the examination. No waiver or variance of the
specific waiting period between exams may be granted to protect integrity.
NAPLEX - no less than 45 days following administration of the failed exam and
no more than 3 attempts in a one year period.
