2 ways people divide abdomen for auscultation
There are 4 quadrants.
• Use belly button as crossroad(midline)
Bowel sounds stop with anesthesia

- Inspect abdomen, look at skin

• Then listen to the right upper quadrant ( colon changes to transverse, where the
liver edge will be and. The gall bladder)
• The left upper quadrant (has the stomach, the spleen, and transverse colon) We
will hear the transverse colon
• Left lower quadrant (descending colon)
Digestion takes place in stomach colon and small intensines
When charting bowel sounds
• Hypo
• Hyper
• Normo (expected)
• Know which one you will hear gurgling for test
• 5-35 times per minute
How long do you wait before you chart bowel sounds as absent? 5 minutes per
quadrant
Listen to 4 quadrants
, Then LIGHTLY palpate (assess for tenderness) When looking for inflamed perineum
you get rebound tenderness (sloshing of fluid in GI system)
Percuss around abdomen (hollow air filled) in each 4 of quadrants
