, SUMMARY OF THE MOVIE
The movie opens with a very close-up of a typewriter typing the title of the movie (“Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling”) and then
explaining:
Ballad = a romantic poem/song
The camera zooms out to show the setting – a modern apartment in Johannesburg (Maboneng).

Carina Human is a reporter for a tabloid newspaper and her dream is to work for a more serious newspaper like Rapport. She
goes to Rapport before going to her own job to speak to the editor of Rapport. Her dad was Braam Human, a well-known
journalist, but she is rejected by Rapport because her stories are too “empty” or light. She then goes to her job at Montage.
The editor there is called Gavin Greeff and he is very rude to his staff, especially the coloured reporter, Kallie, who makes a
good suggestion about the Jacques Rynhardt story but it is given to Carina.
[there is a visual contrast between Rapport (light) and Montage (dark) – which indicates the emotions at the places]

Carina and Mysi (a play on the word “Meisie” – she is the comic relief in the movie) go to the Afrikaans literature awards where
Jacques Rynhardt’s new book, Die Enkeling, is up for nomination. The book is dedicated to a girl, but we don’t know who.
Carina speaks to Alicia Francke (Reynhardt’s previous publisher) and she describes him as a narcissist, egotistical, self-
centred and he was only a good writer because she was his mentor. His new publishers are called Meyer de Necker. Carina also
meets Lena Aucamp who was at school with Rynhardt. She doesn’t want to talk about him. Rynhardt wins the literature award
(Basson Prys vir Letterkunde).

His background: he started writing at 15 yrs old on a typewriter (tikmasjien). After Matric he went to New York to study under
Cynthia Olive. He wrote erotica (hygromans) under the pseudonym (skudnaam) Jacqueline Brink. His first novel was called
Baanbreker (pioneer) and Die Enkeling is the first novel published by Meyer De Necker. Rynhardt does not arrive at the awards.

Carina goes to the police station to find out more. We know that he had sent an SMS to Lena Aucamp and Jan-Paul Otto, his
childhood friends saying: ‘friends forever’ (was this a farewell?). The captain won’t give any more information, but Mysi chats
up a police sergeant and he gives them Rynhardt’s address in Maboneng. Carina then goes to see Jan-Paul Otto (architect). He
thinks that Rynhardt’s disappearance is a publicity stunt and he remembers when they first met at school: Rynhardt was
chatting to a shy girl (Karentjie Koekemoer) and Otto started to bully him. They fought and were caught by a teacher who
called Rynhardt a “railroad rat” (spoorwegrot).

, Rynhardt takes all the blame for the fight and he is caned (corporal punishment) while Otto watches. After that they become
very good friends and inseperable.

Carina goes to Rynhardt’s apartment – there is crime scene tape across his open window where he used to sit and write. It is a
big, modern apartment with a record player. The apartment has been trashed and she looks around – finds women’s clothing
(red dress). She finds a box with a notebook/ diary [the note is a story of how he met a girl:
1995 Storieboekmeisie [he and Jan-Paul were at the river when they saw a girl swimming. They both liked her and she was also
a painter (Jan-Paul was very interested in her, but she was flirting with Jacques). She paints the name STORIEMAKER on his
chest and they flirt]. He calls Lena “Meisiekind”. Carina takes this notebook/ diary.

Flashback to Rynhardt’s youth: his dad works on the trains (he is Train driver of the Year) and he compares a train to a woman
(respect her). The 3 friends picnic on the roof of a train. The mom doesn’t like getting older – she is depressed and lonely and
her husband has taken all her pleasures away, including magazines. She thinks the dad does not discipline Jacques enough.
The friends are talking and Jan-Paul says Jacques should make money by writing erotica (sex stories). It is 1996 and he has just
had a short story published – his friends give him a typewriter. Jacques is jealous of Lena and Jan-Paul’s friendship.
In the book, there is a gap between 1997 – 1999 (he describes this as a “bloedtyd” – when everything dried up & when they all
split up)

Story jumps forward to 2002 when he is back from New York where he describes a relationship with Cynthia. He describes how
he is an “enkeling” (it means you are fine being on your own) and how he has all these meaningless relationships with women
that are purely physical. He misses Lena (who is now a well-known painter).

Flashback to Lena’s last exhibition when he sees her and they kiss in the rain (Storiemaker & Meisiekind). They get back
together and live in his apartment. Jan-Paul has studied architecture in the USA in Boston and has the expression “Moenie dink
nie. Doen net.” (Don’t think. Just do.). Jacques writes sex stories to earn money, they have been living together for 4 years and
the 3 friends are back together.

Carina goes to see the former publisher, Alicia Francke who is still angry because she feels she made him. She explains that he
uses an old typewriter because it feels like he is giving life to something. They worked well together and she was there for the
launch of Nagreiseger (Night Traveler), but she felt that his stories were beginning to sound the same. She tried to kiss him
and says that Lena is holding him back – stopping him from being successful. He is furious.
