DISCUSSION #3: Medieval Lives

THE PEASANT:

The lower class or "peasants" of England were at the bottom of the totem pole, one might say in today's
time. The king was, of course, at the top and the peasants were at the bottom. A lot of their life was
mostly working on land that they were not "legally" obligated to own under the kings reign. Even though
work was a large portion of their life they did have some control over their life and how certain things
were run. Some of these things pertained to laws and land boundaries. Overall, I think I would be able to
fit in back then for the simple fact that most of adult life is living to work to some degree. Many of us
have jobs or careers that we wake up every morning to and spend hours upon hours doing. I just think if
we compare to today's jobs to that time period it of course was a lot different than what it is today. Even
when looking at things like the catholic church we can tell that they used that as more of a place of
education but also was used for social gatherings and other types of days considered "holy days" that
allowed for more time away from their regular work.

THE PHILOSOPHER

The alchemist primarily focused their studies on turning base mental into gold. They felt that gold was a
"perfect" type of metal. They were curious about how things like gold could be changed and how other
things could not. Which they also felt that all things were striving to be perfect and at some point turn
into something that is like gold. But they did also discover the technique of gold plating and techniques
of distillation which was sort of creating the basis of chemistry. During this time, physicians primarily was
focused on preventing illness. Normally they would check someone's pulse and the heat the body
produced. Which then would help determine if someone was sick or not, especially with a fever. Plants
were also used to help cure and help illnesses and for healing purposes. They used plants to use treat
wounds, treat parasitic worms, and stop feelings of hunger or thirst. Sometimes as well more lower class
patients seeking a cure for an illness would also allow to be experimented on so they can be assured
some type of cure.
