Perception Key: “The Modern Eye”

While examining the photographs taken by Paul Strand, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Bruce

Davidson, they all have characteristics. The photograph taken by Paul Strand was taken further

up and is taken of many people walking on Wall Street in New York. It shows many people, and

there are many large cut out rectangles on the side of the building, but we cannot see inside. The

photo is also taken were we cannot see any faces and the entire photo is in black and white. The

next photo is taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1932 and is named Behind the Gare St. Lazare.

This photograph shows a man running, but he is blurry and as the viewer, we cannot see his face.

The photo is also in black and white and taken from afar. Lastly, Bruce Davidsons photograph is

of a couple during the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969. This shows a couple

facing the camera walking through the museum, but a bar is in front of their face, so we cannot

see their eyes, but the viewers are able to see the woman’s smile, which is also another photo

taken in black and white. These photos share similar characteristics, such as all being taken from

afar, being taken in black and white, and we are not able to see anyone’s faces. Their differences

are that they were taken in different areas, they all had different reasonings of not showing faces

(one being too far away and away from them, one being too blurry, and another one having a

metal beam in front of the couple’s face). When in comparison with Tina Barney, they are

complete opposite considering that in Tinas photos, they are in color and showing faces, but in
