Participants Perception of Their Why
This week’s video contained several empowering key points from the participant's
perceptions of their why. The overall takeaway from the participants is that their why is deeply
rooted in their passion and genuine desire to promote positive change. Their commitment is to
work collectively for the overall improvement of all, which can transcend through the test of
time. I felt a personal connection with the statements made by Paul LeBlanc and Jonathan
Wesley. Paul LeBlanc stated simply, “the ‘why’ of this for me is, it’s why we’re here, to be
better
together” […] “I don’t have a choice… I’m called to this work” (SNHU Media, 2021, pp. 01:18).
Then Jonathan Wesley stated “My ‘why’ is I am committed; I am called to help people as long as
I can while I’m on this journey of life. And that is what’s meaningful to me. That is what gives
me life” (SNHU Media, 2021, pp. 11:06). Both of these participants’ statements resonated and
empowered me to stay on this journey that I’m on and to use my passion and lived experiences to
help make a positive difference to another’s life.
Changes to Your Why
Throughout my life, the core of my why has always remained consistent, I have a
servant's heart and want to help wherever possible. I’ve had the odds stacked against me time
after time and experienced struggles and setbacks that played a pivotal role in how my why has
evolved into what it is today. As my why changed, my attitudes, beliefs, and values evolved
from, a more fixed mindset to a growth mindset. The blog Farnam Street quoted Carol Dweck as
saying “In the growth mindset, failure can be a painful experience. But it doesn’t define you. It’s
a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from” (Farnam Street, 2021). A decade ago, my
why was controlled by all the negative experiences I had gone through. I still felt passionate
about helping others, but I also felt stuck and couldn’t do more than what I was doing. Evolving
