Routes of Administration: PO, Rectal

Uses: This medication can be used osteoarthritis, juvenile RA, mild pain, fever, suspected acute MI, stroke,

and venous thromboembolism (prevents reoccurrence).

Drug Action (how does it work?): Thought to produce analgesia and exert its anti-inflammatory effect by

inhibiting prostaglandin and other substances that sensitize pain receptors. Relieve fever through central

action in the hypothalamic heat-regulating center. In low doses, interfere with clotting by keeping a platelet-

aggregating

Nursing Considerations (what do you need to know when giving this med): Some important considerations

to note before giving this medication is it is contraindicated in pregnant women can cause fetal defects.

Children should not take OTC meds containing aspirin especially recovering w/ chickenpox, flu, or fever

due to Reyes Syndrome. Pts. allergic is tartazine can not take ASA.

Side Effects: Some side effects to be expected with this medication are cerebral edema, arrythmias, GI

Bleeding, Reye syndrome, angioedema, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, hypoglycemia, and hepatitis.
